STRETCH GLASS SOCIETY
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The Stretch Glass Society Quarterly
We publish a quarterly newsletter, The Stretch Glass Society Quarterly (SGSQ) which includes educational articles and photographs, news of acquisitions and discoveries, information about stretch glass and other glass-related events, auctions, etc and various other information of interest to those interested in stretch glass. The SGSQ has been published quarterly for more than 40 years and is published at the end of every calendar quarter. It is provided to members and donors as well as other glass clubs and museums.
Stretch-Out Discussions
Periodic virtual discussions of stretch glass are conducted utilizing conference call technology. These discussions are educational in nature and are designed to provide in-depth information about the selected stretch glass to anyone interested in stretch glass. They are publicized via the SGSQ, our website and our Facebook Group. Participation is open to anyone with access to a telephone. A comprehensive 'report' complete with photos is prepared to capture the comments made by the experts leading the discussions. These are available on our website.
social media outreach
Our website (www.stretchglasssociety.org), Facebook Group and Facebook Page (Stretch Glass Society) are utilized to share information about stretch glass and The Stretch Glass Society with all who are interested in learning and/or sharing about stretch glass. Our website was created more than 10 years ago and has been maintained and updated regularly since that time. We continue to add information regularly. Our Facebook Group was started in 2009 by several Facebook users, in conjunction with the SGS, who were interested in sharing information about stretch glass and the Stretch Glass Society via social media. A Facebook Page was added several years later to encourage information exchange among Facebook users with an interest in stretch glass.
Both our Website and Facebook Group and Page were initially established by volunteers who were also members of the Stretch Glass Society. Updates are prepared, and in some cases posted, by a number of SGS members and friends (our Facebook Group has over 1000 “likes” and each of these individuals is able to share or request information on stretch glass on our Group Page). Periodically we contract with web designers and web masters to re-design or update the content on our website, most recently in 2016. We utilize an independent contractor web master to post updates on our website.
www.stretchglasssociety.org is positioned to be THE authoritative go-to website for all information related to stretch glass.
Annual Convention and Show
Each July we sponsor an Annual Convention and Show. Beginning in 1974 The Stretch Glass Society has organized and sponsored an annual gathering of persons interested in stretch glass nearly every year. The Annual Convention, Show & Sale provides an opportunity for anyone interested in learning about or seeing stretch glass to do so and to interact with collectors and expert researchers. Stretch glass displays are provided by members, educational seminars are offered and social events take place during a two and one-half day period, usually in late July.
Over 250 individuals participate in this activity, of which approximately 100 are members of the Stretch Glass Society and the remainder are persons interested in learning about and/or collecting stretch glass. Seminar and other speakers include glass industry executives and workers, experts on stretch glass and others. The convention and show are open to the public and all are welcomed to view the exhibits and attend the seminars.
Seminars, Banquet talks, etc.
Leaders of The Stretch Glass Society frequently appear as seminar leaders and guest speakers at club meetings, conventions and antique shows to talk about and display stretch glass. This is a key activity in accomplishing our education and outreach mission. Currently most expenses are borne by those who volunteer to speak and exhibit; with additional funding we would be able to increase the frequency of these talks/exhibits.
Retain and Recruit members
Annual membership in The Stretch Glass Society is available to persons interested in stretch glass. Annual membership for those members with whom we communicate via email is $18 and for those members who wish to receive communication, including The Stretch Glass Society Quarterly via US mail it is $28
