What we aim to solve
Where there is human suffering, there is animal suffering. To respond effectively to this, outreach efforts are focused on an audience that has the least access to information about animal wellness. Angels of Assisi embraces the human component by approaching people in a respectful way and recognizing that people love their pets, no matter what their socioeconomic circumstances or cultural differences may be.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Community Pet Clinic
Angels of Assisi offers low cost veterinary care including spay/neuter, routine check-ups and vaccines, as well as limited sick pet services including the treatment of infections, minor surgeries/amputations, as well as end of life care.
No-Kill Adoption Center
Angels of Assisi is the only adoption center in Roanoke that offers an "adoption guarantee", meaning that if you cannot keep your adopted pet, for any reason, that pet is guaranteed a place in our adoption center until a new home can be found.
All animals will be spayed or neutered, receive necessary vaccinations, and checked for sound health and temperament before adoption. Adopted pets are welcome to come back yearly for low cost vaccinations in the Community Pet Clinic.
Pets for Life
Angels of Assisi was named a "2014 Game Changer" by the Humane Society of the United States and awarded a mentorship to implement the Pets for Life program. The initiative aims to provide veterinary services directly to low income communities. This program has been very successful in large cities, including Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
Pets for Life will provide ongoing neighborhood outreach and offer free or very low cost services including humane education, spay/neuter surgeries, and wellness care. The program is based on the fundamental understanding that where there is human suffering, there is animal suffering. To respond effectively to this, outreach efforts are focused on an audience that has the least access to information about animal wellness. Pets for Life embraces the human component by approaching people in a respectful way and recognizing that people love their pets, no matter what their socioeconomic circumstances or cultural differences may be.
Operation Hero-Animal Bond
Operation Hero-Animal Bond is an initiative that harnesses the collective power of shelter and rescue partners, the Veterans Affairs, and the Humane Society of the United States. The purpose is to find qualified veterans who would benefit from animal companionship and match them with adoptable animals with the goal of helping both heal and thrive. Angels of Assisi is thrilled to be a part of this program and help connect veterans with animals.
Promoting pet ownership and developing volunteer and pet fostering opportunities exemplify an innovation to support Veteran health and wellness. Research shows extensive benefits resulting from the relationship between humans and animals – the human-animal bond. Some of these benefits include a reduction in blood pressure, heart rate, and stress hormones; improved mood; increase in social connections; and reduced feelings of isolation
Adoption fees for veterans are waived.
Guardian Angel
Hospice- Facing Life’s Challenges in Peace
Angels of Assisi & Good Samaritan Hospice have partnered to offer comfort and support in times of great need. Animals of human hospice patients are eligible for free wellness check-ups which include any needed vaccinations, nail trimming, ear cleaning and more. By assuring hospice patients and their families their beloved pets are being cared for, Angels of Assisi & their Good Samaritan partners hope to lift a little care off of those humans who are facing their own challenges.
Domestic Violence and Pets Caught in the Middle
Victims of domestic violence now have a safe place to leave their animals. When confronted with domestic violence, Angels of Assisi is there to help. People caught in such desperate situations often need temporary help with their pets for just a few weeks while they find new accommodations. Some are even forced to give up their pets. With our Angels of Assisi “Guaranteed Adoption Program” former owners can be assured their beloved pets will be taken care of and will eventually be adopted into a new and loving home.
Homelessness
Angels of Assisi has partnered with the Roanoke City Police Department and The Least of These to help the homeless population of Roanoke and their pets. The Least of These works with area churches to help secure resources for the homeless while the Roanoke Police help provide resources for substance abuse, mental illness, or other issues that are identified. Angels of Assisi provides spay/neuter, veterinary services and provides food and other supplies to help the pets of the homeless.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
To improve the lives of both people and their pets in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding rural areas, with special emphasis on keeping animals in their homes, innovative placement programs, and eliminating companion animal euthanasia in our community.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Angels of Assisi was founded in 2001 with the initiation of a low cost, high volume spay/neuter clinic. Since that time, clinical services have expanded to include affordable wellness and sick animal visits. An adoption guarantee center, complete with a foster program, strong volunteer base, and shelter enrichment plays an important role in achieving our mission.
We believe happy and healthy animals lead to enhancing the lives of the people who care for them, and programs to help include pet retention, and providing free medical services to underserved neighborhoods. Partnerships with the Red Cross, Hospice, and boarding pets for victims of domestic violence were added in the year 2013.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Angels of Assisi is based in downtown Roanoke, Virginia, with easy access to public transportation, and a transport vehicle to bring animals to the clinic. Our facility consists of a surgery suite, veterinary exam rooms, and a pet adoption center. Staff includes five full time licensed Veterinarians, each with a team of assistants. Support staff also includes adoption specialists, volunteer coordinator, foster coordinator, dog behaviorist/shelter enrichment specialist, and kennel attendants.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In the year 2001, over 8000 companion animals were euthanized at our municipal pound. To efficiently tackle these numbers, Angels of Assisi was founded, starting out as a mobile spay and neuter clinic traveling throughout the community. A permanent building with easy access to the public was added 2 years later, along with an adoption guarantee center. As the clinic progressed, low cost services were added to help people keep their pets, including a vaccination clinic and sick pet services. Eleven years later, in the year 2012, 1718 companion animals were euthanized, and we are very close to our goal of eliminating the killing of healthy and treatable animals in our community.
Along the way, with tremendous support in the way of volunteers, foster homes, and donors, Angels of Assisi has continued to enhance the lives of the people caring for the pets in our community with programs dedicated to keeping animals happy, healthy, and in their homes.
