What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Classics
The Classics series showcases musical works spanning centuries, from masters such as Beethoven, Mahler and Mozart, as well as contemporary music. Every year, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to have the opportunity to present quality concert performances at the Sandler Center in Virginia Beach, the Ferguson Center in Newport News and the Chrysler in Norfolk. Also, the VSO has classics concerts at Phi Beta Kappa Hall and Crosswalk Community Church in Williamsburg.
Young People's Concerts
The Young People's Concerts (YPCs) are the cornerstone of the VSO's education initiative. YPCs provide area school-day concerts to more than 25,000 third- through fifth-grade students each year. The VSO provides teachers with a Young People's Concert Guide containing pre- and post-concert activities that support Virginia State Standards of Learning (SOLs) in multiple subjects. The students are bused in to hear a live, interactive symphonic performance by professional VSO musicians. The YPCs introduce students to symphonic music, selected composers, the instruments of the orchestra, orchestra history and the geography of world music. As a result of participating in these classroom and concert activities, children demonstrate a deeper appreciation and knowledge of classical music.
Pops!
The Pops! concert series delights long-time patrons and attracts new audiences with entertaining fusions of orchestral arrangements and popular music.
School/Orchestra Artistic Residency (SOAR)
The School/Orchestra Artistic Residency (SOAR) program supports public school band and orchestra programs by providing expert instruction and mentorship through year-long artist residencies. VSO musicians are assigned to partner schools and visit classrooms frequently to enhance students' musical education, give students individual attention to help them reach their full potential and inspire confidence and a life-long love of music. The VSO has partner schools in six cities, including Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach.
Small Ensemble Specialty Program
The Small Ensemble Specialty Program features up to five VSO musicians and provides themed concerts especially for families with young children. Each forty-five minute long concert has a theme such as Meet the Families, Big Bad Musical Wolf, Aesop's Fables and From Bach to Beatbox.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The VSO aims to entertain, educate, and inspire the residents and visitors of our area through high quality orchestral music performances, education programs, and community engagement initiatives. Our myriad programs and performances are designed to actively engage a broad audience of students, adults, and lifelong learners throughout our region.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
In order to accomplish these goals, the VSO is committed to fostering long-standing relationships with audiences, artists, donors, volunteers, community and business partners based on the following values: excellence and quality, accessibility and community service, financial integrity and sustainability, diversity and inclusiveness, cooperativeness and flexibility, openness and transparency, and perseverance and tenacity. The VSO's new strategic plan emphasizes the importance of establishing a strong base of local support and reaching out to a broader, more diverse community through a variety of different programs.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The VSO has a thriving network of support throughout the Hampton Roads community, including many local business partners, regular patrons, partners in education, community volunteers, and more. To strengthen existing relationships and develop new partnerships, the VSO employs an active full-time staff of 19 non-profit professionals and a 26-member Board of Directors, including local business leaders, educators, and community volunteers. Our well-established network of partners throughout 11 districts in Southeast Virginia help us to decide which on programs and to what audience the VSO should be focusing our efforts. In addition, the VSO enjoys the support of more than 500 volunteers throughout our community, who contribute more than 14,000 hours a year towards helping us reach our goals.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In recent years, the VSO has made great strides towards achieving fiscal stability. By cutting costs in every department and increasing revenues through increased marketing efforts, the VSO has been taking the necessary steps towards eliminating our debt and reaching a healthy financial future. Despite our progress, the VSO has a long way to go to accomplish the goal of financial stability.
The VSO has also greatly improved the quantity and quality of our Education and Community Engagement programs. This accomplishment has been the result of hard work from our partners in education, musicians, and administrative staff. In future years, the VSO aims to expand current our Education and Community Engagement programs to reach more students and lifelong learners beyond Hampton Roads.
