Mission

Our mission is to improve the quality of life for all people in Eastern West Virginia. We embrace the concept that people working together can make a difference. We seek a common philosophy whereby people recognize, understand, and act upon the benefits philanthropy brings to our community. We build permanent endowment, offer maximum flexibility to our donors, meet high professional standards, promote effective and efficient grantmaking, and strengthen charitable organizations in our community. Our service area includes Jefferson, Berkeley, Morgan, Hampshire and Hardy counties of West Virginia.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

We are tackling several challenges at the same time. First, we want to be able to address pressing needs in the community by increasing our unrestricted grantmaking ability. To do this, we are currently raising unrestricted endowments in the form of Community Impact Funds in each of the five counties we serve. Second, we want to help local small and micro-businesses through impact investing and we have recently established a relationship with the Natural Capital Investment Fund, a regional US Treasury certified Community Development Financial Institution. Finally, we are working with existing nonprofit organizations to help them build endowments to support operations.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

In 2021 we awarded more than $1 million in grants and scholarships and our goal is to continue growing so that we can award $1.5 million annually by the end of 2024. Total assets are currently just over $36 million and our goal is to reach $45 million in total assets by the year-end of 2024.

The Eastern WV Community Foundation is working to build unrestricted assets by approaching donors who have been supportive of our other efforts. By doing so we can award larger grants to nonprofit organizations that are addressing the community's most pressing needs.

We also are focusing our efforts on providing the very best service to our donors and the nonprofit organizations they support with their contributions to the Community Foundation.

Additionally, we are taking a leadership role in the nonprofit community and are working with other grantmakers to improve education and workplace opportunities for high school students in the region.

The Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation has three full-time employees with more than 60 years of combined experience in the nonprofit field. By targeting our focus on donors and existing nonprofit organizations, and providing the finest service possible, we believe we can have a lasting and positive impact on the region.

Growth in both grants and scholarships awarded as well as assets under management has exceeded our expectations and we project that this progress will continue unabated. Additionally, we've become well respected in our communities for the leadership work that we are doing.
