What we aim to solve
We are tackling several challenges at the same time. First, we want to be able to address pressing needs in the community by increasing our unrestricted grantmaking ability. To do this, we are currently raising unrestricted endowments in the form of Community Impact Funds in each of the five counties we serve. Second, we want to help local small and micro-businesses through impact investing and we have recently established a relationship with the Natural Capital Investment Fund, a regional US Treasury certified Community Development Financial Institution. Finally, we are working with existing nonprofit organizations to help them build endowments to support operations.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Grantmaking
We support regional nonprofit organizations by funding competitive grants for youth, education, housing, and recreation. Additionally, we work with donor advised funds to support the favorite charities of area philanthropists.
Scholarships
Awarded more than $120,000 in academic scholarships to high school seniors graduating from one of the schools in Jefferson, Berkeley, Morgan Counties, Hampshire and Hardy counties in West Virginia.
Nonprofit Education & Training (NET) Workshops
Presented several times each year, these workshops target the nonprofit sector and include topics such as Good Governance and the IRS Form 990, Writing Grant Proposals, Board Training, Collaboration, and the Importance of Follow Up.
Mini-Grants to Teachers
Small grants up to $500 each are awarded to help public school Pre-K thru Grade 12 teachers purchase supplies and fund classroom projects. Grants are awarded in the early fall so teachers can implement the projects during the school year.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
In 2021 we awarded more than $1 million in grants and scholarships and our goal is to continue growing so that we can award $1.5 million annually by the end of 2024. Total assets are currently just over $36 million and our goal is to reach $45 million in total assets by the year-end of 2024.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Eastern WV Community Foundation is working to build unrestricted assets by approaching donors who have been supportive of our other efforts. By doing so we can award larger grants to nonprofit organizations that are addressing the community's most pressing needs.
We also are focusing our efforts on providing the very best service to our donors and the nonprofit organizations they support with their contributions to the Community Foundation.
Additionally, we are taking a leadership role in the nonprofit community and are working with other grantmakers to improve education and workplace opportunities for high school students in the region.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation has three full-time employees with more than 60 years of combined experience in the nonprofit field. By targeting our focus on donors and existing nonprofit organizations, and providing the finest service possible, we believe we can have a lasting and positive impact on the region.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Growth in both grants and scholarships awarded as well as assets under management has exceeded our expectations and we project that this progress will continue unabated. Additionally, we've become well respected in our communities for the leadership work that we are doing.
