What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Despite a rapidly growing body of empirical evidence showing critical links between oral language development and brain development, many parents are unaware of the benefits of parent-child bonds fostered through stories, songs, read-aloud sessions and intentional conversation time. As a result, many children enter school as much at two years behind, lacking the oral language skills and vocabulary necessary for school success. Remediation is far more difficult and expensive after these critical first five years of rapid brain growth that establishes the brain foundation for all future learning. Healthy interactions with parents help children develop the oral language skills, curiosity, secure attachment and cognitive capacity for reading and school success. By strengthening family bonds of engagement during the child’s most critical developmental years, Raising A Reader Aspen to Parachute provides children with the opportunity to enter school fully prepared for success.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Pre-Kindergarten Book Bag Program

This is our core program. Each week, 1,300 children (newborn to age 5) in 95 classrooms receive a bright red book bag filled with four age-appropriate books. Each set of books is sent home for a week, returned, and then replaced with another set. More than 80 titles reach each home annually. Partner programs include Head Start, Preschool on Wheels, Yampah High School’s teen parent program, many private preschools and all public preschools in four school districts.
