Arts Education

Go Live Project
The Go Live project will reach all second-grade students in Alamance County. The students are bused to a live performance by the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. All second-grade teachers are given resources to use in the classroom to expand on what the students experienced.
Current project objectives
To increase the awareness of the theater arts
To increase the use of the arts as an educational tool in the regular classroom
Strengthen the partnership with the Burlington/Alamance School System

Steel Drum Classes
The program seeks to complement Burlington Housing Authority BHA's music theory class and give students specialized steel drum instruction from Wilton Dubois so that they are able to enhance their identity through inventive musical expression. In addition, this program will offer a new historical and cultural perspective of the Caribbean as well as teach students to appreciate the creativity that music can foster.
Current project objectives
Apply the elements of music and musical techniques in order to sing and play music with accuracy and expression.
Understand global, interdisciplinary, and 21st century connections with music.


African Drum and Dance Workshops
Three one-week workshops will be presented in three Alamance County Schools by Simar Center for Performing Arts. Students will discover the basics and fun of playing the West African Djembe. They will learn proper hand technique, coordination and timing while learning traditional Djembe rhythms, their names and history. In addition, they will learn traditional ballet dance style movements that are generally known for the rhythm that is shared.
Current project objectives
Increase knowledge of and cultural pride in traditional and modern African cultures.
Build skills in African dance, drumming and visual arts.
Build self-esteem, confidence and social skills.
Increase motivation and enthusiasm for participation in the arts and other academic learning activities.

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta
One school’s third grade class will experience the culture of Mexico in a two-hour workshop presented by Alamance Arts. The five stations include:
Station 1 – Mexican Folk Dancing participants will see a presentation by folk dancers and learn steps from a folk dance
Station 2 – Mexican Crafts participants will create paper flowers
Station 3 – Pinata participants will learn the origin of the pinata and participate in the breaking of one
Station 4 – Reading participants will learn about books that have a Spanish story or by a Spanish author that they can check out of the local library
Station 5 – Dodgeball participants will learn the history of the Battle of Puebla and answer questions correctly to stay in the game.
