Christmas House
Christmas House, Inc. is a separate 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization that is organized by the Service League and funded and staffed by the League and the community. It is also the Service League's largest annual project. We're extremely proud of the Christmas House project, as it has grown over the decades to touch the lives of more than 800 local school children every holiday season. It is also truly a community project dependent on community contributions (donations and/or toys) and community volunteers.
The purpose of Christmas House is to provide holiday hope and empowerment to economically disadvantaged children in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Orange County, North Carolina public school districts and their families. Christmas House helps children who are referred to us by school social workers, who see every day how economic need affects so many families in our community. This is not just another toy drive. Each year, we set up a one-day “shop” with new toys of all description, warm coats and beautiful books for over 800 children from age 3 through 8th grade. Parents and guardians are invited to come to Christmas House to select individually the most desired gifts for their children, as only they would know, to be taken home for their own celebrations. In this way, Christmas House is uniquely empowering and respectful of families.
Community Outreach
We are committed to the betterment of our community. In the early years, the Service League was the only community organization of its kind in Chapel Hill. The League identified needs within the community, assembled a team/committee of League members and community members to brainstorm a plan to tackle these issues, and then implemented those plans. The League would staff and fund these projects, until the issue had been rectified, or until a permanent organization was in place to run the operation.
Now, with so many amazing local non-profits, with dedicated staff and brilliant ideas of how to improve the well-being of our community and its citizens, our role has changed slightly. It still embodies our mission to contribute to the betterment of the community, but this is now primarily achieved by supporting our local organizations, through funding, staffing, and guidance. We are extremely fortunate to work with so many dedicated community non-profits.
