What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Life Builders

Life Builders is a 90-day program focused on the physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual development of the residents. The program is designed to help men overcome their addictions and gain the tools required to become productive members of society. Through classes such as Anger Management, Financial Management, Life Skills, Crossroads, and the Victorious Life, residents are taught recovery principles as well as the skills needed to make positive changes in their lives. In addition to these courses, the WSRM’s partnership with Forsyth Technical Community College gives residents the opportunity to obtain a GED and vocational training. Through daily devotions, chapel services and one-on-one counseling, residents are presented with the truth of the Gospel and taught how to live a successful Christian life. Residents who complete the Life Builders program become potential candidates for the 12-month Transformers program. For more information, please e-mail [email protected] or click here for a fill-able application. Once you have filled out the application and saved it, please email the application to the email address listed above.

The New Life Center houses the 12-month Transformers Program. Through this long-term recovery program, residents are guided through a process of total life transformation involving physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual growth and development. As stated in Romans 12:2, the goal of this program is to assist the residents in changing their thought patterns, which in turn changes their behaviors and overall approaches to life. Through courses in computer skills, adult education, financial management, healthy living, leadership skills, and career development, men are led down a path towards self-sufficiency. In addition to these courses, the WSRM’s partnerships with Forsyth Medical Center, Forsyth Technical Community College, and Winston-Salem State University afford the residents the opportunities to learn necessary life skills and further their education. Through daily devotions, chapel services and one-on-one counseling, residents continue to be presented with Biblical truths and discipled in living as new creatures in Christ. Upon completing the Transformers program, the residents are assisted with gaining permanent employment and housing as they work to transition back into society.

The Winston-Salem Rescue Mission clothing ministry provides thousands of articles of clothing each year to those who are in need. In addition to having their physical needs met, men, women, and children are presented with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This ministry is made possible through the donations of gently used clothing and shoes, and serves as a powerful outreach into the community.

A portion of the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission's operating funds are generated from its 20,000 square foot Thrift Store. The store sells furniture, home decor items, exercise equipment, clothing, baby items, books, housewares and shoes among other things. Items are priced for the budget conscious, making the store a popular shopping stop for families of every age.

The store's stock is completely made up of merchandise that is generously donated.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Programs
During the upcoming fiscal year, program staff directly involved in recovery counseling and chaplaincy will receive training and hours required for them to obtain certification and/or licensing for substance abuse counseling. Upon completion of this training, the Program Director will have the appropriate licenses to complete additional staff training in-house.

Life Builders
Under the oversight of the Program Director, the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission plans to further develop a structured work therapy program to better prepare the men we serve to enter the work force upon completion of our programs. The other plans for this program include renovations of the existing buildings to increase capacity; hire evening and weekend security personnel; and increase the volunteers providing tutoring to the men.

Transformers
The Program Director plans to hire a program manager during the next fiscal year to provide monitoring and improvements for this program. Some of these improvements include mentoring program, improved alumni program, and a family education program.

Alpha Acres
With the addition of stable Internet connectivity achieved in the prior year, the Program Manager at Alpha Acres plans to expand the existing learning center tools to provide better educational and career development opportunities for the men served at this location. In addition, future plans are being made to increase income for the farm through business enterprise which also provides worth therapy for the residents.

Community Services Programs
For our clothing ministry and food pantry, we are in the process of increasing volunteers and item donations to expand this ministry.

Emergency Overnight Program
This would be a new program, currently in the evaluation phase. Objectives include emergency overnight lodging, temporary housing, and possible feeder for our Life Builders program.

Development
Currently, the Development Director is working on our cultivation and acquisition of donor and business relationships. The addition of a Development Director will make us more active grant seeking as well. Overall, the increased donations and grant income assists us in reaching the goals set forth for our programs and operations.

In addition, our plan for switching software platforms to incorporate the program, volunteer, and donor databases into one centralized database provides more relevant data for management evaluation and increased organization transparency for donors and grantors. The program, volunteer, and donor conversions will be completed in three phases. Expected completion dates: donor-Jan 2016 (completed); Volunteer early August 2015 (completed); and Program 2017.

In an effort to expand our program reach, a volunteer program titled Bridges of Hope seeks to develop a base of regular volunteers that commit to scheduled hours. This volunteer program, will work alongside our Work Therapy program for our clients.

Operations
Currently, our thrift store location operates downtown with limited parking. Further plans for our stores include staff training on merchandising techniques, and increased advertising, as well as additional training for added efficiency and customer information tracking on the new, computerized registers placed into use mid-2016.
