Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We are working to disrupt the cycle of generational poverty by inspiring families to achieve educational success, foundations for a career pathway, financial education and affordable housing of choice. By providing comprehensive services, our vision is a future where families thrive and create a legacy of success and well-being.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We are moving to provide comprehensive, two -generation services that address areas of wellness, education and employment, financial growth, housing and community engagement. Our core services include early childhood education with family engagement, workforce and career services and housing and financial empowerment.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our Core Strengths are that we are:
INTEGRATED: Integrated services across early childhood education, workforce development, and housing and financial empowerment.
We believe: Generational poverty, like wealth, is passed from one generation to the next. Circumstances leading to poverty must be addressed holistically to lay a foundation for future success. And two-generation or family centered strategies are required to disrupt the cycle of generational poverty. This approach draws from findings that children raised in households that are stable economically are far more likely to have better health, higher school achievement levels, and more long-term job prospects. The parent’s ability to succeed in school and in the
workplace is substantially affected by how well their children are doing.
COLLABORATIVE: Family centered strategies and shared governance, individualized for each family. Community partnerships to strengthen foundations for success, without duplicating efforts. Successful programs in partnership with federal and state funders since 1965. Collaboration with philanthropic investors to build additional infrastructure and support innovation. Committed to incorporating ideas from diverse audiences to promote a culture of inclusion and collaboration.
We believe: Our strength is, and always will be, a diverse team of people. Families are the experts regarding their own needs and the needs of their communities. By engaging families in shared governance, we are able
to create programs that are culturally responsive, inclusive, and effective in supporting families and communities in reaching their full potential. And together with community partners, we can amplify efforts to achieve
foundations for success.
EVIDENCE-BASED: Proven track record of success providing evidence-based services. Over 55-year track record of identifying needs and building foundations for success in underserved communities. Investing in fostering a culture that encourages data-driven decision-making at all levels of the organization.
We believe: Focusing on delivery of high quality services will elevate the impact of all efforts. And data is foundational to identifying and addressing needs in each community and informing improvement opportunities.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
