What we aim to solve
There is a need for more funding to fund our multiple programs such as Cooking Matters, ManCave, Teen PEP, Teen Pregnancy Program, Women of Standard, Weekend Food Backpack and our Open Food Pantry. Communities In Schools of Thomasville need more volunteers to help guide and tutor students. Donations such as non-perishable food, coats, clothes, shoes, and school supplies are highly needed to help keep students in school.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
ManCave
ManCave program provides an atmosphere for young men to learn proper etiquette skills while enjoying a hot meal. This program is a valuable asset to our young men.
Recently a ManCave member said, “The ManCave provides a place to bond with other students that I have known for a long time, but never had the opportunity to really get to know”. Another young man spoke of how it enriched his life, “I understand that I cannot run around acting crazy and expect to get a job. I need to act responsibly and respectfully for that to happen”. This program carries out Communities In Schools of Thomasville mission.
Weekend Food Backpack
Communities In Schools of Thomasville provides a weekend food backpack program filled with food so that children have food on the weekends. One morning last month, a child in Kindergarten was seen taking extra food to put in his backpack. When asked why, he said he did not have any food at home. Luckily, his teacher knew to connect the child to our Student Support Specialist who was able to provide an emergency box of food for the family and set the child up to receive backpacks of food each weekend.
Cooking Matter Class
Cooking matters is a class that teaches children how to cook. Students learn to make healthier decisions in food choices. They are able to try different types of food that they normally would never have access to nor would try if it were available to them. Recently, students from the cooking matters class were invited to the Farmers Market to make snacks free of charge to give out to the public. Students learned essential life skills from this class and experience. From buying their own fresh and healthy food at the farmer’s market to cut up, to making delicious snacks to market and present to the public for a free tasting. Students shared what they learned in the Cooking Matters class and put it into real life situations. This is one of many programs Communities In Schools of Thomasville provides to the students of Thomasville City Schools.

CIS of Thomasville ask for media such as Channel 13, and Thomasville times to advocate for funding and volunteers.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
CIS of Thomasville has a Facebook and Twitter Account. We have set up a constant contact email list, spoke to Tourism of Thomasville, Chambers of Commerce about posting events and fundraisers. Media such as the Thomasville Times and Channel 13 advocate for Communities In Schools of Thomasville.

- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
