What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Welvista aims to address the lack of affordable prescription medication available to uninsured South Carolinians. Inaccessibility to free prescription medications for unmanaged chronic health conditions lead to frequent and uncompensated visits to Emergency Departments and poor population health.
300,000 South Carolinians may potentially qualify for Welvista's free prescription medications. In 2016, Welvista provided free prescription medications to 17,983 individuals throughout the state. Less than 10% of those who may be eligible for Welvista's services are currently enrolled.

Medication Assistance Program (MAP) *FREE Prescription Medications

Welvista is South Carolina's only full-service, mail-order pharmacy that provides free prescription medications to the uninsured.

Of the 740,000 South Carolinians who are uninsured, 149,000 suffer from chronic conditions like diabetes, depression, and hypertension. Welvista partners with pharmaceutical companies to accept donations of brand-name medications and use charitable contributions to purchase generic medications.

To qualify, applicants must be a legal resident of SC, have no health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, or VA benefits, and have a household income at or below 250% of Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Population(s) Served
Unemployed people
Economically disadvantaged people

In January 2016, Welvista established the Community Outreach Advocacy Program (COAP) through grant and community funding. COAP provides medication assistance education, information and individualized enrollment help to eligible South Carolinians throughout the state.

Pediatric Dental Program (Smiles): Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood, affecting 5 to 8 times as many children as asthma. The Smiles program provides dental services to children aged 3 to 18 in four South Carolina school districts, located in Allendale, Dillon, Hampton, Manning, and Summerton. Eliminating oral pain means more productive time in the classroom, and Smiles is committed to improving both the education and health of children.
