Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Students should be prepared to think deeply and critically so that they have the best chance to become the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders who can solve the most pressing challenges facing our country and our world, both today and tomorrow. Unfortunately, not enough students have access to quality STEM learning opportunities and too few students see these disciplines as springboards for their careers. The mission of North Carolina Science Olympiad is provide students with rich and challenging STEM education opportunities through our challenging hands-on tournaments. These tournaments engage students with STEM and professionals in the field. Through our programs we inspire students with real world STEM issues, in addition, to building confidence around academic achievement.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Science Olympiad Tournaments
Every year NCSO hosts tournaments on university, community college, and public school campuses across the state. These tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of different hands-on, interactive, challenging and inquiry-based events that are well balanced between the various disciplines of biology, earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, engineering and technology.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
- Develop practical, standards-aligned STEM content with industry and education partners.
- Provide volunteers and mentor with a platform to share their expertise.
- Create opportunities for students to develop skills around teamwork, problem solving, and collaboration.
- Recognize outstanding achievement by students and teachers.
- Encourage underrepresented students to pursue their passion for STEM.
- Build a strong STEM workforce of the future.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
(1) Enriching the Olympiad Experience
Kurt Vonnegut once said, "Science is magic that works." The Science Olympiad experience
reflects Vonnegut's idea. Part magic. Part hard work. Part unlimited potential. These forces
combine to create fuel for thought, driving students on academic and professional paths that are
extraordinary. Our purpose is create an enduring passion for scientific inquiry and inspire
students to dream, discover, and dare to act in ways that last a lifetime.
(2) Activating Olympiad’s Power for North Carolina
In our increasingly complex world, the challenges and opportunities in science, engineering,
technology, and math are both vast and exhilarating. We have developed and will continue to
invest in resources to assist coaches and tournament directors face those challenges. By
providing instructional videos, curriculum and supplies, we can help students across the state
succeed. Building on these investments, we will continue to encourage students to pursue
degrees and careers in the state of North Carolina.
(3) Sustaining Olympiad’s Momentum
Our ability to act on our exciting objectives depends on the vibrant, diverse, and exceptional
students and volunteers who make up the Science Olympiad. It’s the interaction of such talent
and perspectives that spawns ingenuity and understanding. The third part of our strategy is to
expand our programs to those who need it most, rural and underrepresented students.
