Conservators' Center, Inc.

A world to explore, right next door

aka Conservators Center   |   Mebane, NC   |  http://www.animalparknc.org

Mission

The Conservators Center reconnects people with wildlife by introducing visitors to rare, threatened, and endangered species up close. The park's animal residents serve as ambassadors for their wild counterparts and teach visitors about their species' inherent value.

We know that looking a tiger in the eye, hearing lions call to one another, howling with wolves, and meeting a binturong for the first time will forever change your perspective. And we believe visitors are more likely to become invested in the conservation of species after meeting them in person and discovering how predators fill integral roles in larger ecosystems.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Wildlife intake and long term care

The Center's staff are experts in safe handling of wild carnivores. They occasionally assist with managing a rescue situation, transporting and housing confiscated animals, and when possible, providing them with a permanent placement. Our staff networks to find placements for animals we cannot house.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Members of the public are invited to join us for a guided tour, special event, or children's program, where the focus is always on helping people connect with wildlife and encouraging preservation of these species and their ecosystems. Docents from the park provide programs and meet with interested people at tabling events offsite, and the organization collaborates with other nonprofits for more extensive programs. Educational stations along the nature trails outside the park provide experiential learning for all ages.

The Center has an ongoing collaboration with the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine for case studies, necropsy, DNA and tissue storage, and samples for generating cell lines. Post-mortem samples are provided to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, Harvard Museum of Comparative Anatomy, and other reputable institutions.

College level animal care interns are invited to learn at the Center on a competitive basis year-round. These students are given first-hand experience in wild animal care and husbandry, enrichment building, nutrition, health care, and helping educate the public. Most of the expenses associated with this program are staff time based.
