Programs and results
What we aim to solve
In Jackson County, NC we face a poverty rate far above the national average -- 22.3%. Our mountainous terrain and spread-out population also limit access to food sources throughout the area, leading much of the county to be classified by the USDA as a Food Dessert. We see a steady increase in need for food, both primary and supplemental. We are successful if we have to turn away no one in need of help, and when the quality of our meals remains high.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goals are to never turn any client away for lack of food and to provide more nutritious foods through our two programs.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategies are to continue with store-level donations, food drives, and increasing our food budget to access more healthy foods from MANNA Food Bank and elsewhere. Now that we are doing an annual review with a CPA, this has opened us up to new grant funding. We are also planning to partner with local healthcare organizations to work on nutrition education.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
For the past several years we have set a new record for both programs. This demonstrates our widespread community support and our capacity to handle ever-increasing need. We have a very dedicated board of directors, staff, and volunteers who ensure our success.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In 2020 we purchased a meal-packing machine to allow us to safely distribute meals safely and efficient during the pandemic. These lidded meals can be held in the refrigerator for up to a week, frozen for up to 3 months, and can be reheated in oven or microwave. The containers themselves are also biodegradable.
