What we aim to solve

Potential and talent are equally distributed, but opportunity is not. Students from low- and high-income communities aspire to complete their postsecondary education at similar rates. But those from low-income communities, the majority of whom are students of color, face enormous systemic barriers to earn their degrees, an injustice made worse by COVID-19. As a result, hundreds of thousands of young people transition to adulthood without the skills, experiences, and credentials needed to build careers and lives of their choosing. Only 22% of students from low-income communities earn a postsecondary degree (bachelor’s and/or associate), compared to 67% of their peers from high-income areas.

OneGoal

OneGoal addresses the depth and breadth of the problem by focusing on three pivotal transitional years from high school through the first year of college, working in close partnership with districts, high schools and postsecondary institutions.

We collaborate closely with high schools in low-income communities to identify teachers already working in their buildings and to create the conditions to ensure they can successfully teach OneGoal as a daily, credit-bearing class. We equip those teachers with a robust curriculum, training and coaching, and technology to guide a cohort of students (Fellows) to achieve their greatest postsecondary aspirations.

In Fellows’ junior and senior years of high school, they work to define their personal visions of success, explore their identities, and uncover noncognitive skills and mindsets to enroll and persist in their chosen postsecondary pathways. During the third year, the OneGoal teacher leverages the trust they have built with Fellows to act as a virtual advisor, providing content and counseling to ensure they enroll in their second year of postsecondary education on-track to graduate.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

A closer look shows the vast majority of students who do not complete their postsecondary education are pushed out of the system between the final two years of high school and first year of a postsecondary program. We believe that to close the college degree divide and create greater levels of equity in the United States, we must address these barriers during the postsecondary transition at scale. That is the OneGoal opportunity.

A University of Chicago evaluation led by Tim Kautz and Wladimir Zanoni, and advised by Nobel Laureate James Heckman found: 1) OneGoal increases college enrollment and college persistence rates by 10 to 20 percentage points; 2) OneGoal improves high school academic indicators including ACT scores, number of credits accumulated, GPA, and absences; 3) Growth in non-cognitive skill development is a factor in the positive college outcomes for OneGoal Fellows; 4) Non-cognitive skills can be measured using school administrative data.
