Studio Lab

At Luna’s Studio Lab – an after-school program for children ages 4 to 17 – every child and young adult develops their ‘whole body intelligence’ through composition dance-learning.

Students begin with the simple exploration of dance concepts. As they progress through the composition-based curriculum, they accumulate skills and learn to build full choreographic works that explore solo, duet, trio, quartet and group forms in a rigorous way. Luna’s unique approach to teaching dance is informed by a deep understanding of the creative process, sound principles of child development, and knowledge of how children construct their own definitions of themselves, others and the world.

Dance involves risk and playfulness. All Creative Dance and Modern Dance classes provide safe yet challenging opportunities for students to discover, invent, perform and respond, learning to create dances through active participation, guided discovery and critical reflection.

Population(s) Served

MPACT (Moving Parents and Children Together) was founded in 2001 to bring parent-child dance classes to families in the Alameda County Dependency Court and child welfare systems. Parent-child dance classes have proven to be beneficial for families under duress:

They provide families with a safe, comfortable environment to play and dance together
They facilitate the parent-child bond through relationship-based dance curriculum
They help parents gain confidence in their ability to interact physically with their children
Through MPACT services, partner agencies find ways to realize their goals by integrating dance and play, as well as embodied parent education, into their programs.

Population(s) Served

School & Community Alliances (SCA) children attending schools with low API scores, families residing in residential treatment, DV shelters and incarceration facilities, English language learners, and children with autism or other special needs. We seek to work with schools, districts, agencies and districts to build strong, sustainable dance programs customized for and integral to your community. It is every child’s right to dance. Bringing dance to public school is a core component of a democratic education. Currently Luna partners with Oakland and Berkeley Unified school districts, Marin county office of education, San Francisco Ballet dance in schools and community program, and LifeLong Medical Care.

Population(s) Served

Professional Learning Component is a conduit for action in the creation, expansion, and improvement of high quality, standards-based dance learning for ALL children. Professional Learning services include entry-level through continuing education courses, arts forums, Summer Institutes, certification, coaching, internships, and an extensive resource library.

Through the PLC, Luna fulfills our mission of bringing all children to dance by providing comprehensive education and support to all who teach. Dance educators and specialists, dance teaching artists, classroom teachers (preK-12), college professors, school and arts leaders, physical education instructors and social workers bring something unique to the professional conversation. In partnership, they can deepen the knowledge and practice of dance learning for themselves, peers, community and the field. Last year, 250 artists and teachers came to Luna, in turn bringing improved dance instruction to 24,499 students.
