Lifting Those Left Behind

aka TRIFC   |   Bellevue, WA   |  www.trifc.org

Mission

MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to lift up Nepalese people living with disabilities and those that are disadvantaged so they can achieve their full potential. ORGANIZATIONAL VISION We envision Nepal as a society that fosters dignity and hope for disadvantaged people and people living with disabilities, by providing them with the support they need to become productive, independent citizens. CORE BELIEF STATEMENT We believe that all people left behind in life deserve a chance to achieve their dreams. TRIFC brings much-needed resources and hope to disadvantaged people and people living with disabilities in Nepal.

Notes from the nonprofit

Every child deserves to dream and to have the opportunity to make those dreams a reality. And yet, children with disabilities in Nepal often live in extreme isolation because of the stigma attached to anyone born with physical or mental disabilities. These children suffer from a lack of self-worth, and feelings of depression, guilt, and humiliation. What’s more, they may be subject to discrimination or vulnerable to abuse. Disability is not a choice.

School Sponsorship

TRIFC is currently assisting 65 students with disabilities who were in urgent need of educational funding support. These students range in age from elementary school level to college and university level. Yearly educational costs range from $250 per year for younger students to $1,400 for students undertaking higher education, or younger students who are placed in a special education situation. Costs include a student’s educational fees, uniform, admission fees, and often include dorm/hostel accommodations and food.

We provide twice-a-year reports to sponsors from their student. Sponsors are encouraged to send letters to their child, which is done through our TRIFC sponsor coordinator. We do our best to keep the sponsor informed of any important news regarding their sponsored child.

Deaf Women’s Empowerment Group – Kavre Banepa- outside Kathmandu
TRIFC has been empowering deaf women who were confined within the four corners of their houses by providing them different income-generating training so that they could get the opportunity to express their feelings and could live a dignified and independent life with their own choice. Moreover, with the help of TRIFC in the advocacy of Robert Rose and Rose Steven and in the coordination of ADSoN the women of this organization have received the training of embroidery postcard making and sanitary pad sewing training. Meanwhile, through this type of training, they are earning income and self-sustaining their life as well as have able to build their skills for vocation. Because of this, the attitude and behavior of family members have been changed and they are treated well by the family members. Likewise, their skills are well appreciated by the community as well.

Over 75 surgeries have been accomplished through funding provided by TRIFC. All of our funded surgeries are done at HRDC Hospital, Kavre-Banepa, Nepal. This is a children’s orthopedic hospital where we have a wonderful connections with the doctors and hospital staff. We also provide funding for a physiotherapist at Disabled Newlife Centre. Without proper physiotherapy the outcomes of any surgery aregreatly diminished.

Children and teens with disabilities sometimes need emotional support counseling. It can be difficult to navigate life in their homes, schools or everyday experiences. When there are emotional issues that need addressing, TRIFC and our partner organization ADSoN take it very seriously, arranging for visits to a qualified counseling support center or mental health professional as needed.

TRIFC also has contacts at other hospitals and with dentists and orthodontists to provide needed care on anindividual basis.

In June of 2022, our joint program with TRIFC, our implementing partner ADSoN and the Rotaract Club of Damak launched with a goal to improve educational methods for students with blindness. This program is providing provide meaningful, appropriate and tactile learning/educational materials for students from 10 schools in Province #1 of Eastern Nepal. For example, we provided basic braille materials, braille books, tactile models, tactile puzzles, low-vision devices, human anatomy models and game materials. We are also providing training for teachers, assistant teachers and child-club members that complements the educational materials provided. The project provides basic tactile training, enabling students to improve fine motor skills, gross motors skills and tactile literacy.

The Rose International Fund for Children (TRIFC), the Rotary Club of Patan and Ability Development Society of Nepal (ADSoN) along with our implementing partner, Shijan Organic have been “Empowering Persons with Disabilities thorough Organic Vegetable and Poultry Farming Skills” since 2021 to transfer skills and knowledge to grow organic vegetables and to raise native chickens. We are now in the last weeks of our 2nd class of students as of August, 2022. Our first group of graduates were all deaf/hard-of-hearing and our second group has been primarily women with disabilities. In addition to the organic farming and poultry-raising skills, participants in this 3-month training program learn how to manage a small business, access local markets, form cooperatives and access funds through proposal-writing. Local municipalities have funds allocated by the federal government to provide ‘seed’ money for people with disabilities.
