What we aim to solve
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is spread through the exchange of body fluids (blood, semen, vaginal secretions) from person to person. In South Carolina and other Southern States, HIV infections remain HIGHER than other States and Regions of the U.S.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Supportive Services
This program provides medical care, case management and supportive services to individuals affected by HIV. Services include financial assistance with medical care and medications, health insurance premiums, assistance with housing and utility expenses, food assistance, dental care, substance and addictions screening and treatment, mental health services and transportation to care related appointments. AID Upstate has a robust HIV prevention program to reduce risk of infection and prevent HIV including PrEP
The Laurel - supportive housing
The Laurel - Supportive Housing. The Laurel is a on-site residence facility offering eleven private bedrooms and four semi-private baths, laundry facilities, three hot meals daily and 24-hour supervision. There is no limit to the amount of time an individual, who is HIV+, may live at The Laurel. Applicants must need supportive housing services and demonstrate a need to supervised living, or a lack of ability to prepare meals, follow basic medical regimens or manage a home. The Laurel is not a nursing home, shelter or an assisted living facility. Residents must be able to feed, bathe and take medications independently; however, residents can outsource to assist with these basic daily activities. Applicants must be drug-free in order to be consider for residence.
Addictions Counseling for People Living With HIV/AIDS
We offer out-patient addictions counseling to men and women living with HIV would wish to address their substance abuse or other addictive behaviors.
HIV/STD Prevention and Testing
We provide HIV testing and HIV/STD prevention counseling to specific communities identified by South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the CDC as being at-risk populations for HIV and other STDs. Services include free HIV testing, individual and group level interventions, prevention education and skills building seminars.
Medical (Specialty) care for HIV+
We provide specialty medical care for our HIV+ clients. This includes lab work.
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) for people at risk of HIV infection
PrEP is a method of lowering the risk of HIV infection in addition to condoms and other risk reduction methods. This method involves prescribing an anti-retroviral medication to individuals who are HIV- and at risk of HIV infection. Quarterly lab work and medical provider supervision are required.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
1. To identify people who are HIV+ and unaware of their HIV-status through testing and screening.
2. To engage people who are HIV+ in medical care and maintain their engagement through medical case management and supportive services.
3. To provide HIV-related (specialty) medical care to people affected by HIV and people who are at risk of HIV infection.
4. To prevent homelessness among HIV+ community in Upstate, SC.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
1. Provide free HIV/STD/STI testing and screening to CDC identified "at risk" or target communities.
2. Provide linkage-to-care services to engage newly diagnosed individuals into medical care.
3. Provide a comprehensive menu of supportive services to keep HIV+ clients engaged in HIV and other medical treatment and medications.
4. Provide assistance with Short-term Rend, Mortgage and Utilities.
5. Provide a supportive housing for clients who are at-risk of homelessness.
6. Provide addictions counseling/therapy for HIV+ clients with addiction issues.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have a staff of medical case managers, who are trained to provide supportive assistance to people living with HIV. In addition to our own resources, our medical case managers refer our clients to other community resources to ensure they have the necessary support. We have a proficient staff of phlebotomists, who provide free HIV/STD/STI testing and screening. These folks provide testing services as well as risk-reduction education and counseling to help folks at risk of HIV/STD/STI infection protect themselves and others. We have a 10-bed residents facility for HIV+ clients who need supportive/transition housing. This facility is staffed 24/7. Bedrooms are private; baths, living and dining rooms are communal. Three meals are provided daily. We provide HIV-related medical care for people living with HIV. This includes lab services. We have offices in Greenville and Anderson, South Carolina. Our Greenville clinic includes a pharmacy, where our clients can have their prescriptions filled.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have over 1,400 HIV+ clients actively enrolled in our medical case management program. We test over 1,200 individuals for HIV/STI/STD annually and maintain a "positivity" rate greater than the CDC's standard 1% rate. Our resident facility has an average occupancy rate of 75%. Our current viral suppression rate among our HIV+ patient population is 87%. The national rate is 51%.
We have expanded our clinical services to include primary care for our HIV+ clients, those at risk of HIV infection, and the general public, focusing on the LGBTQ community. The expansion took place in both clinic locations: Anderson and Greenville, SC.
