What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The Middle School Program
This program helps students in grades 6-8 to build educational, creative and technical skills in the Beat Shop (music production), Chopper (welding/metal fabrication), Style Shop (fashion/graphic design), and Scholar Shop (tutoring/academic enrichment). Each shop has a comprehensive curriculum designed to increase students’ interest in and commitment to learning, allow them to express themselves creatively, and broaden their horizons through setting and accomplishing goals in their chosen medium. In addition to regular after school activities, youth in this program take part in field trips, camping trips and events designed to build community and show their work from the shops. Students have the chance to do projects one or more of the shops.
The High School Program
The High School Program is an individually designed mentorship and internship program for Middle School Program alumni. In this program, high school students who excelled at Workshop Houston while in middle school have the opportunity to work in the shops, continue receiving academic support and act as role models for younger students.
The Summer Leadership Institute
The Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) is an intensive academic preparation and leadership development program that provides college-like courses in a university setting while encouraging youth mentor/mentee relationships. Each morning, students attend classes led by instructors hired and trained by Workshop Houston to meet our students’ academic needs. Classes are held at the University of Houston’s Honors College so that students can have the experience of being on a college campus. In the afternoons, SLI participants assist and inspire younger students as mentor/interns in the shops.
