Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Unaccompanied Youth
The Palmetto Place Unaccompanied Youth Program prepares homeless and unaccompanied youth to live independently and reach self-sufficiency. We provide food, housing, clothing and wraparound services for teens ages 16-21 in Richland and Lexington Counties. These teens are referred to the program by school social workers and partner agencies. Teens participating in this program are able to set long-term goals for employment and education and learn the life skills necessary for independence. Many of these residents come to Palmetto Place as a junior or senior in high school and stay at least through high school graduation, although some residents are enrolled in college.
Children's Shelter
The Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter is a safe haven for abused and neglected children of all ages from across the state of South Carolina. Our emergency shelter is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and accepts children and teens who are in foster care through the SC Department of Social Services (DSS). Here, children are in a safe and nurturing environment and have access to after-school programs, tutoring, recreational and social activities. The broad range of service offered concentrate on personal healing and development and include medical attention, mental health care, crisis adjustment and transitional counseling. We accept placements through Department of Social Services.
Basic Center Program
The Palmetto Place Basic Center Program allows us to provide additional housing and wraparound services to homeless and unaccompanied teens in the Midlands. Teens in the Basic Center Program spend 21 days at the Palmetto Place teen house receiving crisis management, medical services, comprehensive case management, educational assistance and transitional housing options along with the creation of a safety net and support system. At the end of the 21-day assessment process, the Palmetto Place staff will be able to graduate teens to the organization’s independent living program, make referrals to mental health care facilities and reunite teens with family or provide other housing options.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our children's shelter aims to protect children who have been abused and neglected. We hope while in our care they learn to trust adults and those who care for them. We hope they are able to overcome the trauma they've faced though counseling and other mental health services.
At our teen house, the goal is to help homeless and unaccompanied teens find self-sufficiency and independence through life-skills training, mentoring, and other support services.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We offer medical and mental health care for kids and teens of all ages to help them overcome and work through the trauma they've faced.
At our teen house, we teach residents the skills they need to live independently in group and individual sessions.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have many community partners who assist in many different aspects. Together we are able to provide wraparound service and create a safety net and support system.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since the shelter was formed in 1977, more than 7,000 children and teens have called Palmetto Place home. Since we started our Unaccompanied Youth Program in 2012 we've provided shelter and services to 23 homeless teens.
In 2016 we were able to expand both program bringing our total number of beds from 20 to 50. This will allow us to serve even more children and teens each year.
