Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our mission is to help people age successfully. While we realize there are barriers that arises with advancing age, our work is to make sure to bridge the gap between these barriers by providing services to older adults so they can continue to live independently and have a life well lived.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Home Delivered Meals
Delivering hot, nutritious meals to older adults in our community.
Comprehensive In-home Services
Our in-home program offers a wide variety of services such as nursing, housekeeping, overnight oversight or personal assistance.
Adult Daytime Care Centers
SCI's Adult Daytime Care program provides a safe and engaging environment for adults 18 or older with cognitive, developmental, or physical impairments. We specialize in serving those with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias who require assistance and supervision throughout the day. Our program helps delay or eliminate the need for placement outside of the home, and offers respite to caregivers.
Neighborhood Centers
SCI’s neighborhood centers are lively, neighborhood-focused activity centers for older adults.
The Learning Center
Healthy aging includes life-long learning! The Learning Center provides intellectually engaging, humanities-based educational programs. Classes range from one-hour lectures to nine-week courses on a variety of topics. Conversation circles, discussion groups, and skill-building classes such as watercolor painting, writing and yoga are also a part of the ongoing curriculum.
Senior Companions
The Senior Companion Program serves a dual purpose, meeting the needs of the senior volunteer and the elderly with health limitations. SCI trains active seniors who want to earn extra money and pairs them with a home-bound older adult in need of friendly support or at a nonprofit organization that serves older adults.
Sterling Rides
This program offers volunteer drivers to transport older adults who can no longer drive to destinations within their community that will help the older adult meet their daily living needs. Like, doctor appointments, shopping (grocery & pharmacy stores), beauty appointments, veterinarian visits and more.
Senior Angels
Our volunteer program includes opportunities such as:
*Meals on Wheels - Deliver lunchtime meals to homebound seniors and activity centers. The commitment is about one hour a week. Routes are available throughout Savannah and outlying counties.
*Neighborhood Centers - Join or lead activities like arts & crafts, bingo, puzzles, and music with seniors who attend the centers.
*Adult Day Health Centers - Join or lead activities like arts & crafts, bingo, puzzles, and music with seniors who attend the centers.
*Friendly Caller - Phone seniors from your home once or twice a week to make sure they're doing OK. You can sign up for as many calls as you'd like.
*SCI Kitchen - Help prepare meals in our commercial kitchen Monday - Friday any time between 6am and 11am. Volunteers can help for 2-3 hours at a time. Must be 18 years old.
We also have special seasonal projects such as blanket drives, painting, and card making.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We aim to provide the best services for older adults and their families in our community by customizing them to fit an individual's changing needs and any barriers they may face. Aging is a part of living, and all of us want to age well. We are the experts who can help older adults live independently with grant-funded and private-pay services.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We are consistently tailoring our services to meet the needs of our community. We make it a priority to stay up to date and implement the best practices in are programs and services. Our of our cornerstones, is providing services that top-notch, affordable, appropriate, and effective.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
For more than 60 years, Senior Citizens, Inc. (SCI) has been the beacon in this community by being the leading organization solely focusing on older adults. We are the place where people turn to for assistance about the effects of aging and we are proud to be a 'one stop shop' by providing linkage to services throughout the area. If an individual has a specific need that SCI currently doesn't offer, we are knowledgeable in programs around the community that could serve them. Our programs are extraordinary examples showcasing our capabilities, from operating Neighborhood Centers for more active adults to Comprehensive Adult Daytime Care Centers for frail seniors and from Home Delivered Meals for home-bound individuals to intellectually engaging, humanities-based educational programs at The Learning Center.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
SCI has grown to serving over 10,000 older adults and their families every year. We are able to provide services from a 1 to 4 county region depending on the program. SCI has become a national benchmark because of the level of care we provide to older adults. We are recognized by the Meals on Wheels of America for our excellence in MOW. Almost 60 years ago our organization provided only one localized service, Meals on Wheels, and since then we have added 16 different ways to serve the older adults in our community and the surrounding areas.
We strive to be innovative because we always want to meet the changing needs of older adults and one prime example of our innovation is our unique program, The Learning Center. We are expanding our building to create a larger Adult Daytime Care Center and to have more room for The Learning Center. SCI is aware of the huge incline in the older population in the next few years because of the baby boomers and we want to make sure we are ready to serve. We constantly look at each program to see what ideas can be created to help new barriers older adults face in our community. An example, our kitchen is currently working on a more customizable menu, so we can provide food to any individual whether they are vegetarians or vegans.
