What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Voluntary Action Center primarily strives to provide prevention of hunger and homelessness. Hunger Prevention is addressed through our Food Pantry which provides grocery items once every 30 days and our Community Kitchen which serves hot meals each weekday. Homeless Prevention is addressed through our rent/mortgage financial assistance program which pays past due rent to prevent eviction. Our utilities financial assistance program pays past due utilities to prevent disconnection which violates lease terms and can result in eviction. Our Bridge homeless program provides emergency shelter to families who have a child in the home. We also provide additional programs for low-income individuals and families.

Emergency Financial Aid

Rent/Mortgage and Utility assistance is available for individuals and families who are at risk of eviction or interruption of services.  This program can provide a one-time emergency assistance for the most recent 30 days of billing.  The program must provide a guaranteed additional 30 days of service and is not designed to help establish new services.  To qualify clients must be residents of Gordon County, have the bill/rent in their name, be within income guidelines, and have proof of income for the past 30 days or future 30 days. This progam also provides emergency hotel vouchers for individuals who have recently been evicted.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our organization strives to provide emergency services to individuals and families from low income families. In addition to providing emergency financial assistance we also seek to provide free training and education to help families overcome financial hardships. We strive to provide a hand-up instead of a hand out.

We work to identify the needs in the household to provide the best assistance for the situation. We also work to add goals for our clients to ensure they are moving to self-sufficiency. We work to provide these services through the help over volunteers which helps raise awareness to the needs in our community.

We are able to provide food pantry assistance, hot meals through our Community Kitchen, rent/mortgage and utility assistance, Homeless Outreach, toiletries, clothing and household items assistance, medical equipment, and other emergency services. We also provide free training for budgeting, money management, and other classes through local partnerships. We have just recently been able to add laundry and shower services for our homeless individuals.

Our organization has been operating since 1971 to provide emergency services. In the last four years we have been able to identity more areas of needs and have implemented a Community Kitchen which serves hot meals Monday-Friday. We have also added laundry and shower services to help homeless become employment ready.
