Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia's vision is to feed the hungry by distributing nutritious food to nonprofit agencies and at risk elderly and youth, to assist in disaster relief, and work towards long term solutions to hunger and poverty.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The programs of the America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia include: Kids Cafe In 1989, Kids Cafe was created in Savannah when two young boys were found searching for food in an area housing project. Second Harvest currently has 85 Kids Cafes serving over 4,200 hot evening meals each weekday to children who also receive tutoring and structured learning games during the school year. During the summer months, we provide two meals each day to ensure children are receiving the food they need while school is out. Brown Bag for the Elderly The Brown Bag Program was created to provide emergency food assistance to low-income seniors. Each month, volunteers pack 1400 bags of food which are delivered in seniors that struggle to make ends meet and must often decide between food and medicine. Market Place Distribution The Market Place Distribution program provides food to homeless shelters, congregate feeding programs, pantry programs, and backpack programs for children, etc. Mobile Food Pantry In an effort to provide food to under-served communities, Second Harvest distributes food directly to low-income areas in rural communities with the assistance of volunteers.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Sustainability is the key to ensuring that we are able to meet our goals and continue to provide food assistance to coastal Georgia. Our Board of Directors along with staff, volunteers, donors and the community develop strategic goals and work plans to ensure we have the tools needed to continue our mission.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Our accomplishments through the end of 2018 include:\n• Kids Cafe program prepared and delivered 386,580 meals to more than 72 Kids Cafe and Summer Feeding locations in our community where an average of over 3,600 students per day are served the only evening meal they’re likely to eat.\n• At-risk senior citizens received more than 20,000 bags of essential groceries through our Brown Bag for the Elderly program.\n• Our Mobile Food Pantry program provided 2.6 million pounds of food to rural communities serving more than 62,000 individuals. \n• We provided more than 11.8 million meals (15,141,311 million pounds of food) to the above programs and to 285 partner agencies who feed hungry people in our 21-county service area. Last year, we helped more than 141,000 people!
