What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The mission of Temple Theatre is to entertain, educate and enrich the audiences of our region through the art of live professional theatre and youth training. Without Temple Theatre's offerings, the City of Sanford, and Lee County would be severely lacking in arts resources. We are employers, producers, consumers, educators and key promoters of Sanford, bringing in over 41,000 people annually who spend money and time in Sanford. Temple Theatre works to fill in the gaps that exist between government services, educational opportunities and community needs. One hurdle we face at this time is securing funding that will enable the Theatre to renovate and expand the space needed to continue to provide and expand our educational programming, and better serve special needs populations.Renovating and improving the existing space will solve these needs.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Temple Theatre relies extensively on grants to enable the organization to continue to upgrade, expand and enhance our physical plant, youth programming and staffing needs. Temple Theatre aims to reach more people overall in our community with a specific desire to reach more people in our growing but underserved populations. Through our educational offerings, outreach programs, and performances we continue to expand our reach and become an even more inclusive arts organization in our region. The economic impact that the Theatre has on the local economy ($4.2 million yearly) has established the Theatre as a pillar of the community and an impact which we strive to maintain. Our goal is to continue to support the revitalization of downtown Sanford and enhance the quality of life for our citizens. We aim for all our productions and classes to be accessible and available to people who have disabilities. We offer sensory friendly, audio described performances, assistive listening devices and sign language interpreters for productions upon request. As the #1 tourist attraction in Lee County and one of its most frequented businesses, Temple plays a key role in promoting all of the City of Sanford. We aim to continue to expand our youth programming and community outreach. Specifically, the renovation of one of our existing buildings which would provide Temple Theatre with much needed space that would be fitted to better meet the needs of our students as well as our patrons.

Our strategies include collaborations with the local community college, public, and private schools. We seek to increase our outreach and our ability to increase accessibility for our educational offerings. Temple Theatre continues to recruit a more diverse board and staff. We continue to seek more diversity in our casting for our seasons (Our 2020-2021 season is a Season of Diversity & Inclusion). The Theatre is able to provide a high caliber arts experience because actors and creative teams receive compensation for our shows. We provide scholarships for children to participate in our educational programs, student ticket discounts, as well as educator and military discounts to keep the entertainment accessible.

Temple Theatre's mix of shows and special events will bring NC artists as well as national talent to the stage, offering our patrons Broadway caliber entertainment at a fraction of the cost.

As a pillar of the community and the economic and cultural center of downtown Sanford who brings in 40,000 people a year, Temple Theatre feels poised to serve 10,000 students yearly. Since 2002 Temple Theatre has grown our education programs from one summer conservatory of 24 students to reaching 6,000 youth in 2019. With Temple's educational offerings having grown from a single offering to 7 different programs, we know our capability to meet our goal of reaching 10,000 students is achievable. Our strategic planning includes increasing accessibility, increasing staff in order to further the outreach in Lee County and beyond. Our staff is prepared to meet our goals under the leadership of our Producing Artistic Director and NC Mainstreet Champion, Peggy Taphorn. She has kept the Temple Theatre afloat by re-working budgets and keeping the Temple Theatre fiscally prudent. One look at the theatre's current statistics and it is evident that Temple has become one of North Carolina's most important historic theatres and a place filled with stories and a vivid history.

Our immediate focus is on increasing participation in our student matinees and educational classes. Our season ticket sales and donations continue to increase annually with the stewardship of long time donors and the fostering of new donor relationships. Temple Theatre attributes the increase in support to the high caliber of programming and our fiscal responsibility. While the pandemic was devastating to Temple Theatre, we are focused on the future and continue to invest in and serve this community.
