What we aim to solve
Statistically, one in five individuals will experience a mental or behavioral issue this year. That doesn’t have to mean headline-grabbing actions. It can mean the person who is quietly trying to function while experiencing depression and or anxiety. It can be the couple who is slowly drifting apart after 30 years of marriage. It can be the older adult who is experiencing grief and loss because friends are dying or moving away to live near their adult children. It can be caregiver burnout, or addiction. Mental health doesn’t care about race, age, gender, religion or your zip code. It’s an equal opportunity issue. Of the 20% of the population that experience a mental health issue, 60% will not seek treatment due to the stigma associated with these issues and the cost of quality therapy.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Therapy and Counseling Services
We offer therapy and counseling services to individuals, families, and couples in Tennessee. Our therapists are professionally trained in a variety of disciplines (Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling, and Social Work), and additionally all are equipped to address the spiritual concerns of clients. By professionally integrating the resources of faith and behavioral science, Spritually-Integrated Therapy is a unique form of treatment for emotional, behavioral, relational or spiritual distress or dysfunction. In 2022 we provided more than 7,000 sessions of spiritually-informed therapy to clients across Tennessee. We raise and provide funds to offer our services on an income-based fee scale.
Compasiòn Initiative
In 2007, Insight began offering counseling services in Spanish to address the needs of a growing Hispanic population. The number of hours of counseling provided in Spanish has increased each year since we began offering this service; however, this population continues to be one of the greatest financial need.
Clinical Training for Therapists
The Clinical Training Program is designed to facilitate completion of standards and requirements for Tennessee licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist, Professional Counselor, Social Worker, or Clinical Pastoral Therapist. Training is offered at Advanced and Supervisory levels (for those who have already completed their academic requirements). Supervision is also provided for interns and residents from local Universities who want to integrate Spiritually-Integrated Practice into their psychotherapy training.
Community Access
The Community Access program is designed to assist clients that cannot afford our regular fee of $140 per session. We offer assistance on an income-based fee scale. Each year approximately 85% of our clients qualify for reduced session fees.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
The Employee Assistance Program provides mental health counseling benefits for employees of Insight's partner companies.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Insight Counseling Centers, formerly known as the Pastoral Counseling Centers of Tennessee, Inc., was formed in 1985 when a handful of visionary people from Vine Street Christian Church brought to fruition their dream of providing spiritually informed and psychologically sound counseling for the Nashville area. Now 30 years later, we have grown to eight locations throughout Middle Tennessee and provide more than 5,000 hours of counseling to individuals, couples, and families in our community every year.
Pastoral Counseling is a unique form of counseling that uses spiritual resources as well as psychological understanding for healing and growth. Traditionally, Pastoral Counselors are mental health professionals who also have in-depth religious and theological training. Some Pastoral Counselors are ordained clergy or persons otherwise endorsed by a religious faith group. We offer help and healing from a heart of compassion and personal faith that accepts and respects the beliefs of every individual with whom we work. In short, we provide for each client the highest professional standards through rigorous training, certification, licensure, and peer consultation.
We also train the next generation of therapists as we are an intern site for master's level students.
Additionally, we take seriously the bold goal of reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues by working with area employers and other groups around Mental Health Awareness Month and throughout the year as well.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Insight Counseling Centers contracts with therapists who share the belief in our work that is grounded in the compassionate and healing nature of God. We are called to embody God’s healing presence to people of all faith traditions and those who claim no faith tradition. This means we seek to:
-Meet each client, colleague, and student with compassion, respect, and honesty.
-Accept and include each person as a reflection of the rich diversity of God’s creation.
-Join with each client in their journey to wholeness, focusing on their needs, and going wherever their process of self-discovery and renewal leads.
-Provide for each client the highest professional standards through rigorous training, certification, licensure, and peer consultation.
We have established eight locations in Middle Tennessee to reduce geographic barriers to receiving our care. We have in place an income based fee scale to make our care more affordable.
Insight Counseling Centers offers a variety of supervisory experiences for therapists at various stages of their training. We utilize carefully selected practicum students and interns in most of our offices. Students from local Masters and Doctoral programs are invited to apply for these positions. Students are selected as space is available.
We provide for the educational benefit of your community — congregations and other organizations. Workshop topics address the concerns and interests of modern life, with its complex challenges. Any of our workshops can be tailored to fit the needs requesting organizations. During May Mental Health Awareness month we place "Mood Walls" in locations throughout our service area. The walls contain stickers with "mood words" on them. The invitation is for people to choose a sticker and "wear their mood" as a means of inviting people to discuss their feelings.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Insight Counseling Centers is capable because of the people associated with it. Our volunteer Board of Directors is made up of community leaders with expertise in healthcare, law, mental health, finance, human resources, strategic planning, and religious studies.
Our executive leadership team consists of:

Our Intake Department is comprised of dedicated volunteers and undergraduate interns who wish to provide a compassionate voice to first-time callers reaching out for support.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
At the time of this writing our strategic plan is only one month old, so it is a bit premature to report on progress.
During the 12 months of 7/1/2018 to 6/30/2019, Insight provided 5,125 sessions for 896 unique clients. 97% of all client sessions are subsidized with 58% of clients paying $50 or less per session.
1) 697 of 896 (78%) established treatment goals
2) 547 of 896 (78%) showed an improvement of at least half of their treatment goals
3) 291 of 461 (63%) of clients who attended at least 6 sessions showed an improvement of at least 5 points on the GAF/GARF scale
Not only have clients made progress toward their goals, they have expressed satisfaction with their services:
• 98% agreed or strongly agreed that they felt more capable of dealing with their concerns as a result of therapy.
• 92% said they would refer a friend, coworker, or family member to Insight.
• 100% said they felt satisfied or completely satisfied by the service they received from Insight.
As we look to our future, we do so with an eye towards continuing to break down barriers to care. During the next 12 months we will explore teletherapy as a means of making our care available to more people in Tennessee.
Two of our Nashville locations are housed in temporary space. An immediate strategic planning item is to secure permanent space to provide therapy to our Nashville clients as well as to provide a "hub" where Insight team members can gather for clinical meetings and training events.
