McWane Science Center

McWane Science Center is a hands-on science museum dedicated to sparking wonder and curiosity through science. Our vision is to excite and inspire inquiry and innovation.

At McWane Science Center, we believe that “science people” are the ones that help solve our world’s challenges. This does not only mean the doctors, chemists, engineers, research scientists, biologists, physicists, geologists, inventors, or others practicing science-based professionals. This also means the everyday individual who loves science, thinks creatively and independently, uses science processing skills to solve problems, and thrives in exploration and discovery. McWane’s purpose in our community/state/world is to inspire “science people,” and that is what we do every day. We help spark and foster this love in kids of all ages, and we help keep the flame going or reignite it in the adults that walk through our doors or participate in our learning experiences wherever they are delivered.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

In 2016, McWane Science Center adopted the current Strategic Plan 2016-2021. The strategic plan processwas directed by Clarus Consulting and included McWane’s staff, leadership volunteers (including current and past Board of Directors), program volunteers, organization donors (individuals as well as representatives from local government, corporations, and foundations), and other key community stakeholders.

At the outset of the project, a successful strategic plan was described as one that would facilitate focus for the investment of resources and human capital, provide guidelines for decision making and metrics for measuring success, and define vision, mission and target audiences. With that in mind, the strategic planning process was designed to:
• Describe McWane Science Center’s current conditions and operating environment.
• Clearly identify McWane’s desired impact for the next five years.
• Clearly outline organizational objectives in key areas to achieve desired impact.
• Outline indicators of success to track progress on the objectives.
• Articulate McWane’s strengths and how it strategically can apply them to achieve the objectives and desired impact.
• Identify strategic directions and partnerships, and tools that will assist in assessing future opportunities.
• Identify the organizational capacity (at both the board and staff levels) that is required to implement the chosen strategies and objectives successfully.
• Identify strategic ways to generate the revenue needed to meet the objectives.

As a result of the strategic plan process, McWane adopted new mission and vision statements and identified five strategic priorities.

The mission: To spark wonder and curiosity about our world through hands-on science experiences.

The vision: To excite and inspire inquiry and innovation through science.

The defined goals included:
Center/Attraction: McWane will be a top-rated destination and an innovative, dynamic and interactive attraction, entertaining and educating across the range of science, technology, engineering and math concepts.

Academy/Programs: McWane will be known throughout the state and the region as an indispensable contributor to science education and the development of a 21st century workforce.

Garnering Support: The story of McWane’s impact and reach will be widely known, enabling us to broaden engagement of current and potential supporters.

Partnerships: McWane will identify and pursue selected partnerships with organizations that complement our expertise, share our interests and are committed to move the community forward in STEM concepts and careers.

Team Development: McWane will develop and support the team necessary to enable us to fully realize our mission and vision.
