What we aim to solve
Since its inception in 1993, the Alabama Coastal Foundation (ACF) has worked to bring together stakeholders with differing interests to facilitate mutually beneficial solutions to Alabama's environmental challenges. ACF envisions a society where environmental decisions are based on an accurate understanding of the underlying science, the dissemination of factual information, and the engagement of government, industry and citizens to find solutions to those challenges.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The ACF's goals are to cooperate with government, private sector, and nonprofit organizations to lead volunteer activities for large-scale restoration efforts. The ACF also works with local school districts to ensure that educational programming is approved according to the state curriculum, while also ensuring that our programming is focused on equality and diversity.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The ACF strives to provide consistent, diverse, ongoing opportunities for citizen action in each of the three areas focused on within the mission statement: cooperation, education, and participation. The ACF cooperates with government, private sector, and nonprofit organizations to lead volunteer activities for large-scale conservation efforts such as Share the Beach Sea Turtle monitoring program.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The ACF is capable of achieving its goals through cooperation, participation and education. The ACF's work has been recognized widely through several awards including the Gulf of Mexico Program’s Gulf Guardian Award, Coastal America Spirit Award, Alabama Wildlife Federation Governor’s Conservation Award, Mobile Bay National Estuary Program Stewardship Award, Best Environmental Education Program Award through the Environmental Education Association of Alabama and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab's Gulf Coast Marine Environmental Leadership Award.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The Alabama Coastal Foundation measures its progress in all areas by the increased number of volunteers, hours, community/nonprofit/government partners, number of youth and adults educated on the importance of protecting the environment, and habits restored/protected.

- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
