What we aim to solve
Action Ministries Inc. is a nonprofit that provides an extensive network of community partners and volunteers with the tools and expertise to empower fellow Georgians to break the cycle of poverty. By meeting basic needs of hunger relief, housing and education, Action Ministries removes barriers that prevent thousands of Georgians from breaking the cycle of poverty and realizing their potential.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Feed the Hungry
Founded in 1977, Feed the Hungry Foundation Inc. began as a project of a fraternal business organization and, until 1985, was a seasonal ministry helping families only at Christmas. Today, major distribution still takes place at Christmas, but Feed the Hungry helps between 15,000-20,000 families throughout year, representing approximately 90,000 individuals. Nearly 60 percent of the food goes to children. Feed the Hungry, its volunteers and partners provide more than 1 million meals annually in Atlanta and north Georgia. In January 2012, Feed the Hungry merged with Action Ministries to give the people of Georgia increased access to hunger relief and to better serve our combined clients and communities.
Smart Lunch, Smart Kid
Nearly 1 million children in Georgia schools are eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunch, a crucial meal that disappears in the summer. Smart Lunch, Smart Kid, through the dedication of thousands of volunteers and donors, ensures that these children are fed in the summer and on school breaks. Unlike other feeding programs, we take the food to the children in their neighborhoods, removing the barrier of lack of transportation.
Superpacks
More than 1 million children in Georgia qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program. For many of these children, school meals may be the only food they eat during the day. What happens when they go home over the weekend? Children at risk of weekend hunger receive a bag of food that can easily and discreetly fit into a backpack on a Thursday or Friday afternoon or before a long holiday. The food is child-friendly, nutritionally balanced, nonperishable and easy to prepare. By working with volunteers from churches, businesses, clubs and local neighborhoods, the food is picked up at the Action Ministries Regional Hunger Relief Office and distributed to children in need at partnering schools.
Housing
Action Ministries Housing has four service programs, each targeting a different facet of homelessness. Through these programs, Action Ministries Housing works to not only support and guide those who are experiencing homelessness, but eliminate the cycle of homelessness altogether.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Action Ministries mobilizes communities to address the challenges of poverty by focusing on hunger relief, housing and education. We envision communities in which the cycle of poverty is broken and everyone has the tools needed to reach their full potential.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Through housing, hunger relief, and education programs, Action Ministries provides unique solutions to the various systemic concerns that hold people in the cycle of poverty. Our programs are unique to the communities in which the operate, recognizing that urban and rural poverty cause different challenges and may create different paths to success.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Throughout North Georgia, our extensive network of individuals, civic groups, businesses, faith communities, foundations, and governmental partnerships allow us to develop unique solutions to poverty and homelessness.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In 2017 we served over 117,000 Georgians working to break the cycle of poverty. Our education programs grew to encourage hundreds of families throughout North Georgia to build their employment skills, increase their educational capacity, and become part of their communities. Our hunger programs worked to incorporate food rescue and increase access to fresh and healthy food in communities across our footprint. In Atlanta, veterans homelessness was effectively ended, and Action Ministries is proud to have been a key partner in that category. Next, we hope to see family homelessness end in Atlanta, to increase third grade literacy rates across our footprint, and to provide fresh and healthy food to families and individuals in need throughout both our urban and rural communities.
