What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use

As one of a number of partners in the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, the CDC Foundation works with experts at CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) to implement the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS). GATS monitors adult tobacco use and the effectiveness of tobacco control measures among adults in 35 countries that account for approximately two-thirds of the world’s smokers.

Population(s) Served

To establish a regional surveillance network—MenAfriNet—to collect and analyze high quality case-based meningitis surveillance data from representative sites across the African meningitis belt. The meningitis surveillance network will evaluate the impact of MenAfriVac to guide research on new vaccines and strategies to optimize impact of existing vaccines.

Population(s) Served

To promote chronic disease prevention and health promotion for the 500 largest American cities by identifying, analyzing and reporting census tract-level data through an interactive City Health Indicator website.

Population(s) Served

Preventing maternal deaths: An estimated 700 women die of pregnancy-related causes each year in the United States and more than 50,000 have serious health complications. Many maternal deaths and complications can be prevented. Strong, accurate data are critical for identifying opportunities for preventing deaths among mothers and designing effective interventions. A collaboration between the CDC Foundation, CDC and the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs is working to better understand the causes and factors contributing to pregnancy-related death, with the aim of identifying opportunities with the greatest potential to end preventable maternal mortality.

Population(s) Served

Body measurement—or anthropometry—helps practitioners and policy makers understand the nutritional status of a population, including children, and identify health risk factors. This year the CDC Foundation, working with CDC through support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is conducting a study to evaluate an innovative anthropometric technology that uses 3-D imaging. This technology operates from a mobile device, which is easier to carry in the field and use with children, and holds the promise of greater accuracy when compared with traditional anthropometric tools. This new tool and emerging technologies could revolutionize how practitioners take body measurements—leveraging accurate and current data for a healthier society.
