Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Synchronicity Performance Group was founded in 1997. The company was formed out of a desire to work collaboratively to bring challenging and meaningful theatre to Atlanta audiences. We have a focus on producing plays by women and those that provide significant opportunities for women artists. We work primarily with women playwrights and designers. The company is currently led by our Co-Producing Artistic Directors, Rachel May, Hope Mirlis and Michele Pearce. Our programming for 2004 includes three mainstage productions, two shows for family audiences, the Playmaking for Girls project and a the development of a new company-created work focusing on the impact of war on women?s lives. Since 2000 we have grown in several important areas: from a mailing list of 300 to more than 5,000, from a Board with six members to 20, and from a budget of $35,000 to $242,000. Our dedication to excellence was recognized when Synchronicity won the Metro Atlanta Arts & Business Council's 2001 Abby award for "Best New Arts Organization." In 2004, Synchronicity's season was named as one of the "top ten theatre experiences of 2003" by the Atlanta Journal -Constitution. What the critics said about the company in 2003: ** "Synchronicity has consistently produced some of the city's most exciting and essential theater. And quite simply, "Lobster Alice" ranks among the most pleasurable stage experiences of the year," Wendell Brock, Atlanta Journal-Constitution. ** "More than any other theater in town, Synchronicity constantly finds important, cutting-edge new plays before anyone else," Jim Farmer, Southern Voice. ** "This portrait of contemporary urban life (References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot) is the next New World in American theater, and a sizzling finale for Synchronicity's season of surrealism," Wendell Brock, Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Community Outreach Through a partnership with the Wholistic Stress Control Institute (WSCI), Synchronicity works with girls in WSCI's SIMBA program, a violence intervention program for incarcerated youth in the juvenile justice system in Georgia. The workshops help this under-served and at-risk population express themselves creatively and explore the issues that have negatively impacted their lives. Synchronicity obtained funding to conduct six workshops per year in 2003 and 2004. This program works as part of SIMBA's ongoing programming, enhancing its work with detained youth by adding a theatre and writing component. Workshops are held every other month at the Metro RYDC, which serves Fulton and DeKalb Counties. At each two-day workshop, approximately 20 girls will work with professional women artists to write and perform their own plays. The 12-18 year-old girls participating in this program are extremely at-risk. Girls are detained at the Metro RYDC for offenses ranging from prostitution, running away and parole violation, to armed robbery. We serve 120 girls over the course of the year.
