Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
To improve the health, education and quality of life for the people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Improving health - the opening of a new hospital has allowed the underserved communities access to quality health care.
Improving education - we have donated computers to the John Mabuidi School in Kinshasa and opened a computer lab at the school. The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation participated in a teacher exchange.
Quality of life - Partnership with the Starkey Hearing Foundation where over 1,650 hearing impaired and deaf people received new hearing aids free of charge on site at the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Academic partnerships both local and from abroad will foster the development of research, education and capacity building in related fields. This is a tall order, but one that is gradually being filled. Our partnerships and support from our generous donors allow us to continue our work in the Congo. The hospital has a capacity of 150 beds and we hope eventually to bring it to 300 beds in the future. It is a general hospital with all major services such as internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery including general surgery and sub-specialties like urology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, otorhinolaryngology (ENT). The hospital is unique in the DRC for some of the services and amenities that it provides for patients, such as a full meal service, laundry service and a pharmacy for both in-patients and outpatients. These services are often taken for granted in resource rich countries, but where resources are limited, families and patients are expected to bring their own food, sheets and to purchase their medicines (even for hospitalized patients) as well as surgical supplies. The hospital has several flagship programs. A detailed description is beyond the scope of this article, but we will mention two of them as examples. The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation has a partnership with Opportunity International, a well-known international microfinance organization that opened its first bank in the DRC in the neighborhood of Masina, a few blocks from the hospital. As part of that collaboration, the staff of Opportunity International has held informational sessions on financial literacy for the staff of the BMMH. Similarly, the medical staff of BMMH has held educational sessions on health topics and hygiene for the clients of the bank. Other expansions to the collaboration are currently under consideration including participation in the Fistula Repair Program. With funding from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the BMMH has developed a program for the repair of vaginal fistulas for women who are afflicted with this most debilitating condition. The results are very encouraging and represent a life-changing experience for these women who after years of ostracism can go back to their communities and be accepted as full members. The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation has established several promising partnerships. The first illustration is the DMF/BMMH partnership with the School of Medicine of the Protestant University of the Congo in Kinshasa. Through this academic affiliation, medical students from UPC will rotate for their clinical training at BMMH and there will be faculty exchanges and research projects carried out between the two institutions. In December 2013, a team from Innovation Africa, a non-profit organization that brings Israeli solar technology innovation to African communities, traveled to the Congo to explore ways of bringing solar energy to the BMMH and surrounding areas. Project completed in July 2014.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have treated over 120,000 patients since the opening of the hospital in December 2007.
We have partnered with the Starkey Hearing Foundation to fit over 1,650 hearing-impaired and deaf patients with new hearing aids.
We have partnered with Innovation Africa to provide solar light technology to Congolese villages.
We have not accomplished the opening of a new primary school outside the capital city of Kinshasa.
We have not accomplished the addition of 130 beds at the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital.
The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation has been engaged in seeking resources to support the hospital both locally and internationally. Generous friends and supporters have helped with in-kind and financial contributions but the need always threatens to overcome the resources. Capacity building efforts in the area of medical training have been ongoing. Several foreign medical professors have visited the BMMH for short periods and funding is being sought to expand this initiative. The ultimate goal is to make the hospital a model of international collaboration that can be utilized to train medical professionals in the DRC, the US and other countries in a mutually beneficial effort. These exciting initiatives are not without their challenges, and the most immediate one is to sustain the BMMH. The hospital provides a high standard of care which is welcomed by all the patients and their families, but ongoing operations have a cost. The hospital is located in a very poor area of the city of Kinshasa and most of the patients have very limited economic means. Families often struggle with problems of survival and commonly have to make heart wrenching choices between food and medicine. One of the reasons that we feed our patients is because we know that nutrition is as important as medicines. This economic dilemma affects access to health care and threatens the survival and sustainability of health care institutions committed to serving the poor.We feel strongly that every human being is valuable and deserving of good health and wellness. Through the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital, the dream has been realized, but many challenges remain. To ensure long-term sustainability, a number of approaches are being used and most recently the DMF has launched an Endowment campaign to provide stable and long-term support for continued growth. We want to continue to apply the lessons that we have learned during the past 16 years to ensure that the BMMH will continue to flourish for years to come.
