Patron and Material Services: Sharing Physical and Digital Collections

Our customer service desk serves as the main point of service for checkouts/returns and account services. In addition to our physical collection of more than 130,000 books, magazines, DVDs, software, and music, our members can access more than 50,000 digital ebooks and eaudiobooks, in addition to premium online research databases with journals, magazines, and articles. Additionally, as part of delivering a robust “library of things” to the community, we offer members the ability to checkout bicycles, fitness trackers, iPads, laptops, umbrellas, and wifi hotspots.

Each day, at this university for the people, nearly 800 area residents cross our threshold to find resources that educate, entertain and/or enlighten. Our circulation staff helps patrons locate and check out 650,000 materials each year and, through our homebound program, delivers materials to city residents in need.

With more than 11,700 cardholders, the Winter Park Public Library is one of the city's most widely utilized and, according to city surveys, highly valued resources. Residents of Orange County and Maitland receive reciprocal borrowing privileges here at our Library, and hundreds of people who do not reside inWinter Park purchase our library cards because they so highly value our services.

Our Research Desk is at the heart of the Library, where professional librarians serve as guides, advisors, and educators for people from all walks of life. In this world of information overload, our research team provides access to and expertise on print and electronic resources that, in many cases, are lifelines for our members. Nearly 30,000 people last year used our public access computers and wireless internet. The Library is the only place in town where computer use, individual assistance, and classes are free and available to all. Our librarians develop and teach classes on a wide variety of topics including technology, safety, finances, and career readiness. When we find a need we cannot meet, we hire or recruit outside experts

Engaging Young Minds & Building Literacy: Our youth services department is a vibrant, happy place where children up to age 18 build literacy skills, develop a love of reading, and engage curious minds on topics from biology, robotics, 3D printing, the arts, and history. With classes like Sensory Stories geared to those with special needs or Girls Who Code, empowering young women in technology, youth and their families engage in classes and activities that ignite a passion of lifelong learning.

Unlike most public libraries, we also maintain an historical
archive and employ and expert archivist. Not only do we collect, preserve, and
share our community’s rich history, we also provide genealogical resources
online and in print and digitize precious family memories like photographs,
letters, and film. Our archive also houses Smith Grant research, an annual
research award co-managed with Olin Library at Rollins College.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our goals moving forward are to 1) improve our member experience, environment, and services; 2) increase awareness, build brand recognition, and reach out into the community; 3) deliver high quality education and develop sustainable partnerships; 4) modernize library operations, refresh internal operations, and augment funding.

We continue to purchase resources that serve the needs of our patrons in many different formats. We offer many educational opportunities ourselves and we partner with others to provide the best educational experiences for others.

Our capabilities rely on our 11 full-time librarians and our total staff of 32 individuals, all dedicated to our mission of high-quality education, and our funding. Two-thirds of our annual support comes from an operating grant from the City of Winter Park, but the library is responsible for securing the additional one-third of our budget annually. We do this through grants, earned income, and donations. In our 134 years of existence, we have built partnerships throughout the community with local government, cultural and educational non-profits, public and private schools, and volunteers. Volunteers help us run our used bookstore and contribute countless hours to maintaining our collection, facility, and teaching classes. Our 23-memmber volunteer Board of Trustees provides financial support and connects us to additional community resources.

Every year, we strive to assess our resources, increase overall usage of services and attendance, and measure outcomes and output. Our challenge rests in being such a wide variety of things with limited funding.
