What we aim to solve
The needs of our aging community with cognitive issues ranging from mild stage dementia and Alzheimer’s to total cognitive decline must be addressed so that we can offer hope and the most current assistance available to this beloved population. Lourdes Noreen McKeen has an increase in residents with all levels of cognitive decline coming into the nursing home. We are looking for ways to stabilize or increase their cognition.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
To develop a state-of-the-art multi-sensory stimulation room for those residents with cognitive issues living in the skilled nursing and nursing home environment. Residents will experience multi-sensory activities designed for their individual cognitive needs and abilities, music therapy to sooth and relax, and aromatherapy to help invoke happy memories of past experiences. The goal is to create a peaceful, serene atmosphere instead of an institutional feeling.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
There are exciting innovative programs and equipment available for purchase and installation which are specifically designed for those with cognitive issues. The use of interactive special activity programs, multi-sensory rooms with visuals and special tables to provide tactile and visual stimulation, can help reduce behavior issues and anxiety experienced by residents with dementia and ultimately reduce the use of psychotropic medications.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Lourdes Noreen McKeen has designated a room strategically placed on the nursing home unit where the residents with greatest needs are. Throughout the hallways and in the activity areas, interactive images will project on the walls and special tables where residents can interact and benefit. The activities staff is already in place to incorporate this program.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
This program has been approved by the Lourdes Noreen McKeen Board of Directors. The next step is to order the equipment, build the sensory stimulation room and train the staff.
