Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our building was completely destroyed in Hurricane Ian. We are rebuilding on the site that the building stood on.
The Purpose/Mission of the Fort Myers Beach Art Association (FMBAA) is to provide and further education in the cultural aspects of life on Fort Myers Beach and its environs; to promote the study, practice, and appreciation of art; to hold art exhibitions and programs which are open to the public; and to encourage art instruction of children and junior artists. Our goal is $3 million. The FMBAA is a 501c(3) and we rely solely on the support of our members and our community to
maintain our existence. We have determined that without substantial monetary support, it will take many years before we are able to rebuild our art gallery on Fort Myers Beach. We are the only working art gallery on the island and our community needs us as much as we need them. The benefits of the island having a working art gallery are many. Over the years we have kept track of the zip codes of the visitors who have entered our gallery and we are proud to say that people have come from all over the world to tour our gallery each year. Being open to the public every day (except Sunday) provides an opportunity for us to share the beauty of not only Fort Myers Beach specifically, but also the other beautiful islands, parks, and beaches in our surrounding areas through the art created by our members. Our visitors love to watch our Plein Air artists who may be gathered on our beach or at the Mound House, creating a lovely painting that many have sold right off their easel. We also host many events that are open to the public where they can come and meet our members, ask questions, learn about certain artistic techniques, and join us for our awards ceremonies. The members of FMBAA love to meet our guests and learn about their interests and ask them what they love about our island. We have found that the island visitors love to have a piece of Fort Myers Beach to take home with them something that will last over the years. A piece of artwork that they can look at every day to remind them of their time here on FMB is the best souvenir they can buy. We love helping them find that perfect piece. We have many repeat visitors each year and they always come looking for a new piece to add to their collection. It is so important for all of us to be able to connect with each person who walks through our doors. We would love to be able to provide them with the information they are seeking and to also share the love that we have for the arts and our community and help
them have a better experience while they are visiting the island.

Our organization plans to rebuild on the same lot that housed our working art gallery from 1968 until it was destroyed in 2022 by hurricane Ian. Our short-term goals are to accomplish as much of our mission as possible using borrowed space for shows, classes, meetings and working together to paint. Our ability to host the student scholarship show (high school students) is currently hampered by our lack of a building. Our long-term goal is to rebuild so that we can fully operate and fulfill all components of our mission.
Our capital campaign goal is $3 million. Since our building was destroyed by hurricane Ian, we are planning to rebuild on the site of the previous building. The demolition and cleanup of the old building has been completed. An architect has been secured and we are close to having a design of the new building. The Architect has developed a plan to move forward on rebuilding which includes obtaining permits. Because of the extreme devastation on the island, progress is moving slower than anticipated. Michael Sheeley, the Architect, with MK Architecture in Fort Myers, has provided a letter outlining the time frame of completion to a minimum of 2-3 years.

Without funding to rebuild our gallery, our ability to fulfill our Mission Statement (outlined in the Purpose section of this document), will be hindered. As stated above, not being able to rebuild will have a direct impact on our organization and our community. We are the only working Art Gallery on the Island. We provide continuous shows displaying art. We are open to the artist members and just as importantly open to the public. One of the unique qualities about the FMBAA is that we work very hard to find ways to involve our community and visitors in as many events as we can throughout the season. How do we do this? By offering a safe space for anyone who is interested in learning. We offer classes and workshops, hold exhibits, speaker events, open houses, award ceremonies, and receptions. These types of events are all open to budding artists, seasoned artists, or those that just love art. These are all valuable ways to offer cultural education to visitors, residents of the town as well as our own members. Providing these cultural experiences within the Town of Fort Myers Beach is important as it provides another venue for visitors beyond the beach. Without a building, we are renting space off the island, using other galleries to provide a space to show our art. Without a rebuild, a
working an art gallery will not exist on the island. A working art gallery like ours is unique, rarely seen across the US.

We have successfully submitted and received a grant from the Collaboratory toward our rebuilding. We have formed a capital campaign committee to create a strategy and plan for raising capital to rebuild our building. We are actively working with FEMA for recovery funds. We expect a large shortfall of funding despite our reserves, insurance, the recently acquired grant and FEMA funding.
