What we aim to solve
Currently, the majority of Haitians lack access to quality education; a prerequisite for sustained social and economic development. Despite improvements in enrollment and the commitment of the Haitian government to strengthening public education, challenges in funding, teacher training, and access remain widespread. These issues put a generation of Haitian youth at risk of lacking the knowledge and basic skills necessary to succeed in the labor force.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We partner with Haitian leadership and staff to support their dream of a better life for the poor in their country. Specifically, we help provide a quality education, basic healthcare and one hot meal per day to the students of The Good Shepherd School, bringing dignity, hope and a future to the community of Pele, Haiti.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We listen to the local community leaders who know best what their needs are and partner with them to meet the needs. We connect people through storytelling, awareness and cross cultural experiences so that they might share their gifts, talents and resources to improve their lives and the lives of people they learn to care about. We invest resources in the school and projects.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our greatest asset is the relationship we have built with the Haitian staff and community over the past 34 years. We have built a relationship of trust and partnership that allows us to work together to accomplish shared goals to improve the lives of students and families in the community. We have also built solid relationships with funding partners: almost 400 individuals comprised the financial base for support in 2015; we have strong relationships with churches, civic organizations, corporations, and foundations who partner with us in our work. Lastly, we have healthy partnerships with other development organizations working in Haiti. We have partnered with Architecture for Humanity to design and rebuild the school, GiveLove to design, build and train the staff to use an eco-friendly latrine, and many other organizations. We hire local laborers for construction projects and clean water projects. We buy local produce and food for our feeding program. These partnerships all contribute to the success of our work in-country.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We desire to see the community of Pele changed -- More students graduating, more students receiving a nourishing meal, more families served, more local people employed. We want to see a more peaceful neighborhood free of gang-related activity. Our support of school rebuilding, training and employing teachers and staff, hiring local construction labor for building projects all propel us toward meeting these long-term goals. We have learned that there is much in Haiti out of our control -- the political, social climate. We have learned that the local community knows best what they need. They are the experts and we listen and collaborate with their expertise about their culture and their community. Relationships always have risks but we continue to learn and love and make strides toward our goal of a more healthy and productive life for our friends in the community of Pele.
