Season Concert Programming

The Key Chorale concert season includes Masterworks
concerts, Chamber Series concerts, and several special collaborative concert
presentations, including the annual Cirque des Voix®, a wholly unique
partnership with The Circus Arts Conservatory. Key Chorale is Sarasota’s only
symphonic chorus to regularly offer Masterworks performances with full
professional orchestra and highly regarded professional guest soloists.
Artistic Director Joseph Caulkins is known for his innovative programming,
collaborations, and artistic excellence. Each season, Key Chorale presents
between ten and fifteen performances each year, from grand masterworks of
Mozart and Beethoven to a cappella chamber music to pop and bluegrass.

As part of Key Chorale’s educational program, “Tomorrow’s Voices Today" is a unique choral festival that incorporates over two hundred singers, from students to octogenarians. In partnership with Sarasota County Public Schools, each season three Sarasota County high school choirs sing in a collaborative concert with individual and combined festival chorus performances. In the weeks leading up to the performance, Artistic Director Joseph Caulkins visits the high schools to work with each choir individually.

Off-Key Chorale is a partnership with the Neuro Challenge Foundation, Inc., Key Chorale and Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota. This choral group meets weekly and is comprised of people living with Parkinson’s, family members, caregivers, and volunteer singers from Key Chorale. Led by Artistic Director Joseph Caulkins, Off-Key Chorale provides an opportunity for Parkinson’s patients to improve and strengthen their voices through singing, and provides a fellowship activity for people whose social opportunities are often limited by this disease.

This choir provides positive and joyful experiences for those living with memory loss and their care partners. WAMK Chorale is a collaboration between Key Chorale, Senior Friendship Centers, and Jewish Family and Children’s Services of the Suncoast . Two eight-week sessions are planned for each year, led by Maestro Caulkins with the assistance of Key Chorale volunteer singers. The group explores the potential of people living with memory loss to experience renewed purpose, learning, friendships, and happiness. Participants find the sessions uplifting, fulfilling and fun as well as an important part of their memory care.

Each semester Mr. Caulkins creates a unique curriculum of vocal exercises, breathing exercises, and musical selections around a theme which concludes with an end of session performance for friends and family.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Key Chorale, the Suncoast’s premier symphonic chorus, is dedicated to transforming lives through innovative programming, artistic excellence, educational outreach and service to the community.

Key Chorale, led by Maestro Joseph Caulkins, produces one-of-a-kind programming, collaborations that inspire, and artistry that stirs the soul. In addition to the 110+ member chorale, the Key Chorale Chamber Singers selected from the full chorale, perform unique, often genre-bending performances.

The Key Chorale Student Scholar Program is designed to prepare high school students with an exceptional aptitude for music for college-level success in music. Student Scholars sing a full performance season with Key Chorale as well as part of several other performance opportunities and master classes held throughout the season. All experiences are made available at no cost to the selected participants.

“Tomorrow’s Voices Today” is an intergenerational choral experience involving more than 200 students. Each year the High School Choral Festival showcases three Sarasota County high school choirs. Each school’s choir performs independently, then joins the 100+ trained voices of Key Chorale in a festival chorus that is led by Maestro Joseph Caulkins.

Since 2018, Key Chorale has partnered with Visible Men Academy, a charter school for at-risk K-5 boys, to provide a music program and experiences for the 100+ students who would not have any formal musical experiences without our involvement. Key Chorale singers and educators conduct hands-on music activities with students during a five-week program each semester. Each grade level is paired with a Key Chorale-approved music teacher, who includes grade-specific activities in music, sound and singing culminating in a final performance for family and friends.

The "Off-Key Chorale" is a partnership with the Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinson’s, and the Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota. The group is comprised of people living with Parkinson’s, family members, caregivers, and volunteer singers from Key Chorale. Led by Artistic Director, Joseph Caulkins, the Off-Key Chorale provides an opportunity for individuals with Parkinson’s disease to improve and strengthen their voices through singing, and provides a fellowship activity for people whose social opportunities are often limited by this disease.

The "Where Are My Keys? Chorale" provides positive and joyful experiences for those living with memory loss and their care partners. WAMK Chorale is a collaboration between Key Chorale and Jewish Family and Children’s Services of the Suncoast. Two eight-week sessions are planned for each year, led by Maestro Caulkins with the assistance of Key Chorale volunteer singers. The group explores the potential of people living with memory loss to experience renewed purpose, learning, friendships, and happiness.

In 2019, Maestro Caulkins received the “Arts Leadership Award for Artistic Achievement” from the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County for his many seasons as Artistic Director of Key Chorale. Through dynamic collaborations with organizations like Sarasota Orchestra, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, The Sarasota Ballet, The Venice Symphony, and The Circus Arts Conservatory, Key Chorale is able to create unforgettable programs that continue to push the boundaries of choral music.

Key Chorale was the winner of the 2020 Chorus America “Award for Education and Community Engagement” given in recognition of their extensive education programs, reaching more than 400 students each year, and its commitment to community outreach. The Off-Key Chorale, for those living with Parkinson’s started in 2012, and the Where Are My Keys? Chorale, for those living with Alzheimer’s and memory loss, celebrates the joy and therapeutic aspects of singing.

In 2021 choirs all across the world were silenced by the pandemic, but Key Chorale found ways to continue to make music producing six online concerts and events, nine episodes of Morning Coffee & Maestros and created the Come Together Choir, Online Choral Rehearsals, as a way for singers throughout the country, and beyond, to come together and enjoy singing safely while social distancing. In June, Key Chorale premiered “Masked” in Troubled Times, a virtual choir and masterwork singalong of Haydn’s Mass in Troubled Times.
