COMPACT
The mission of Orlando/Orange County COMPACT is to function as an education and business partnership assisting underachieving, disadvantaged or challenged students, encouraging them to stay in school and reach their maximum potential. Our vision is that all COMPACT students become responsible, contributing members of society.
COMPACT is first and foremost a dropout prevention program that stresses the reinforcement of core subjects, service learning, goal setting, study skills, career exploration, social responsibility and civic awareness. The program strives to select students who fit one or more of the following characteristics: overage for the grade level, low grades and/or test scores, poor attendance, irresponsible behavior, low self esteem and those with personal and/or family problems. These characteristics affect students at all levels of schooling, elementary, middle and high school. COMPACT also attracts students who may be the first in their family to graduate high school and/or the first to seriously consider college as an option post high school.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
COMPACT's number one priority is to encourage young people to remain in school through high school graduation. This was our first goal when COMPACT was organized in 1989 and it continues to be our driving motivation. We continue to encounter students who will be "...the first in their family to graduate high school.", or the first in their family "...to attempt to enter college."We feel that the success of Orange County Public School's graduation rate improvement (mid 70%-ile in 1989 to the mid 90%-ile currently) can be attributed to the involvement of volunteer mentors through the COMPACT program. If we want to continue to provide Central Florida with positive, contributing members of our society as a whole, we must continue to support our young people through mentoring activities to help students realize the worth of an education.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
First to raise funds to continue to support the operations of the organization, either through grants, support from our business partners, fund raising programs and contributions from the general public.Secondly to continue to seek out school locations that are willing to have volunteers work with some of their struggling students.Thirdly, to continue to offer incentives to students who have through their hard work have become the students they envision through successful attainment of specific goals.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our capabilities include a willing public that is looking for a method to get involved, needy students who want to become successful but do not quite know how or do not have a support mechanism that can help guide them and professionals (teachers and counselors) who are will to help us make the match between a needy student and a willing volunteer.
