What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

HIV/AIDS

NYELA is an implementation of a Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Interventions (DEBI) project.     DEBI is a science-based; community, group, and individual-level HIV prevention intervention project.    Its goal is to reduce the spread of HIV and STDs, and to promote healthy behaviors.    There are two phases to NYELA. One phase is knowledge building and the other is HIV testing. Phase one is called SISTA or sisters informing sisters on topics about AIDS.   The aim of SISTA is to empower women to make informed and negotiated decisions about sex.   This aim is achieved through five two hour weekly sessions followed by two booster sessions.   The second phase is counseling, testing and referral (CTR).   Participants recruited for CTR are from those attending SISTA as well as women not attending but are at high risk for HIV. Both graduates of SISTA and those tested receive follow-up support for behavior change sustainability.

Our cancer outreach program is designed to educate, empower, raise awareness and facilitate access to screening services for multiethnic, medically underserved communities in Central Florida. We specifically target breast, cervical and colorectal cancers, which heavily impact the underserved. Our program provides community-based education about risk factors, symptoms and age-appropriate early detection methods through mammography, breast self-exams, Pap testing and colonoscopy. We also provide critical information about where to obtain low- or no-cost screenings, in conjunction with medical referral and case management, to ensure timely follow-up and client navigation through a complicated health care system. Importantly, we tailor our program to meet specific cultural and language needs of diverse audiences, offering program activities by trained community health workers in Spanish, Haitian Creole, English and French.
