What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Animal Adoption, Rescue and Owner Reunion
Programs to re-home or reunite with owner as many of our animals as possible through adoptions at the shelter, portable adoptions in other community locations, rescues in partnership with PetSmart Charities and other reputable rescue organizations, use of print, social, and other media to publicize animals brought to the shelter.
Spay/Neuter
Low Cost community spay/neuter program to promote and increase responsible pet ownership and decrease animal overpopulation and animal homelessness. We offer below market rate spay/neuter to the community as well as altering all unaltered animals brought to the shelter.
TNR
Trap. Neuter and Return program for community cats. In order to humanely address the feline overpopulation in our county we trap homeless felines, provide basic veterinary care and spay/neuter services, and release them back into their colonies, where they are cared for by volunteers.
New Leash on Life Thrift Store
New Leash on Life is a thrift store in downtown Frankfort offering vintage clothing, furniture, antiques, and much more. The proceeds from New Leash on Life go directly to support the Franklin County Humane Society!
Animal Shelter Operations
The Franklin County Humane Society serves as the designated animal shelter agency for the city of Frankfort and Franklin County, KY.
Annual intake is 1800-2000 dogs and cats. The humane society has an 80% live release rate despite being an open admissions shelter.
Care and treatment of shelter animals while working toward their re-homing or reunion with owners forms the bulk of operations at the shelter and comprises the majority of our budget.
