What we aim to solve
Our organization is working to solve the feast-or-famine regularly experienced in the nonprofit world. We now hold monthly fundraisers on a small scale to try to even out our funding throughout the year. In prior years, we had one large fundraiser per year and tried to stretch those dollars all year. We also opened an endowment fund and are seeking endowed gifts to create a self-perpetuating source of income.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Transitional Housing Program
Our housing program for women and children addresses both the physical and spiritual problems of the people we serve.
*We engage in case management and financial planning with each family we shelter.
*We partner with local mental health agencies and Christian counselors to address psychological needs.
*We coordinate with a team of pro bono attorneys to handle legal issues.
*We match each sheltered woman with a volunteer Friend in Christ to help build a social network of support, encouragement, accountability, and friendship.
*We align volunteer mentors with our sheltered women to teach parenting and domestic skills.
*We partner with local churches to ensure that our residents are engaged in a Christian community.
*We help women and children meet educational goals by coordinating with state and local educational institutions.
*We provide tutoring by certified teachers who volunteer to work with our sheltered children.
*We offer our children weekly lessons in voice, guitar, and piano by a certified music teacher.
*We offer job training to our sheltered women through our Encore Shop Thrift Store.
Medical/Dental Program
Mercy Medical is a Christ-centered, state- licensed medical/dental clinic. We are a member of both the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics and the Kentucky Free Clinic Association. We are staffed by volunteer medical and dental providers, nurses, ancillary medical staff, pastoral caregivers, interpreters, and office professionals.
The mission of Mercy Medical Clinic is to provide compassionate medical and dental care to uninsured, underinsured, and financially disadvantaged people, and we accept qualified patients as space becomes available. The average wait time for an initial appointment is less than one week.
Mercy Medical serves patients from Shelby (our primary focus), Jefferson, Henry, and Spencer counties. Individuals must show lack of health insurance and financial need to qualify for treatment, and proof of income is required. Each patient is asked to satisfy a $10 co-pay before seeing a provider. We are able to deliver laboratory services at a greatly reduced cost to patients. Our goal is to nourish both body and spirit, so each patient may regain or maintain health.
Patients are seen by appointment only. The clinic is open 4 days each week (Mon-Thurs 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.) and the 2nd and 3rd Saturday mornings of each month (9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.). In 2015, Mercy Medical experienced 5,199 patient encounters.

What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
In our housing program, we use the following strategies to meet our goals:
*We engage in case management and financial planning with each family we shelter.
*We partner with local mental health agencies and Christian counselors to address psychological needs.
*We coordinate with a team of pro bono attorneys to handle legal issues.
*We partner with another local charity that has a successful program to teach parenting and domestic skills.
*We partner with local churches to ensure that our residents are engaged in a Christian community.
*We help women and children meet educational goals by coordinating with state and local educational institutions.

In our medical clinic, our strategy is to provide patients with high-quality medical and dental care.
In our Helps Program, our strategy to meet the needs of hurting people who come to us for emergency help is to continue seeking donations to our food pantry and our thrift store, so we will have sufficient supplies. Also, we will aggressively market the sale of merchandise we receive in excess to the demand for emergency help, so we can fund the many programs we offer.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Operation Care has successfully met the needs of the people we serve for the past 29 years. Our programs are time-tested and successful in helping meet the needs of people in our local community. While fundraising is a constant challenge, God has blessed Operation Care by prompting generous people and organizations to donate the funds required. We are accountable for every dollar that is donated to Operation Care. We undergo and independent audit each year, and we have met all of the Better Business Bureau's 20 criteria for charity accountability for the past 10 years. 94% of every dollar donated to OC goes directly to our programming for people in crisis.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
As described above, more than 215,000 services have been provided to hurting people by Operation Care over the past 29 years. We have expanded several times to meet the needs of more people, and we have expanded our donor base to ensure we receive the resources we need.
We have not yet received national accreditation for our programs, but we are seeking that now and are confident we will receive national accreditation in each of our ministries.
