What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
San Quentin Counseling Program
In 2005, inmates at San Quentin recognized the need for treatment and recovery as an instrumental part of their own rehabilitation. With the help of volunteers on the outside, they developed and launched a first-of-its-kind program to train inmates to become professional alcohol and other drug counselors certified by the California Association for Alcohol/Drug Educators (CAADE). Once they complete the rigorous training, the inmates work under the clinical supervision of experienced addiction treatment specialists to give back to their peers by providing services to other inmates. Support4Recovery helps to fund and support this innovative program. Additionally, Support4Recovery continues to expand its scope of services and support to re-entry inmates throughout Contra Costa County.
Alumni Association Strengthening & Building Program
In 2010, Support4Recovery Advisory Council’s research identified there was a need to build and strengthen the network of alumni associations throughout the County. Support4Recovery brought together 14 recovery programs that either had an established alumni association, or wanted to start an alumni association to join together for advocacy and grass-root initiatives related to recovery. Our objective is to provide resources and best practices for groups wishing to establish alumni associations which support the goal of building stronger communities and creating collaborative opportunities that further the mission of Support4Recovery.
Seeds4Recovery Program
The Seeds4Recovery Program builds from recent activities in County residential treatment facilities, where residents have been participating in community gardening. Seeds4Recovery is a workshop based, outdoor program, based on the principles of horticultural therapy. Studies have found that cultivating plants has many benefits, including physical, nutritional, mental health, and social. Using outdoor spaces freely available to the public, the Program creates a place where alumni can collaborate and build stronger communities, while learning how to grow food for consumption. It also offers opportunity for alumni to bond with their children, providing nature-based activities that are age-appropriate and can be done at home.
Support4Housing Emergency Housing Fund
Support4Recovery has been acutely aware that the most important issue facing individuals and families in recovery is the lack of affordable housing. Upon completion of treatment, many individuals find themselves homeless or living in a homeless shelter. While shelters can provide an opportunity for people who might otherwise be living on the street, these shelters do not always offer a clean and sober living environment. In some circumstances, treatment providers will try to extend the length of treatment so individuals have a safe place to stay. In 2013, Support4Recovery started the Support4Housing Emergency Fund that helps individuals in recovery find safe, affordable places to live.
Support4Families
The Support4Families program will launch in 2018 as a new program for Support4Recovery. This program will provide scholarships and activities for children whose parents are in recovery. Parents and children will be able to select activities that they are interested in, such as karate classes, dance lessons, football, baseball, art classes, etc. Scholarships will be awarded to cover associated costs. Parents will also have access to resources that will support them as they rebuild and strengthen bonds with their children. Our goal is to provide support to 20 families in 2018 -- with the goal to expand this program in 2019.
Support4Kidz
Alcohol and other drug addiction affects all members of a family. Support 4 Kidz provides cash grants, including diapers, food and clothing to “host” families that care for the children that are the innocent victims of the disease, while the parents are addressing their addiction/alcoholism. We aim to help provide stability to the family so that healing can begin.
Support4Education
Individuals in recovery are nominated to receive grants to pay for their fees to become Alcohol and Other Drug Counselors. Support4Recovery will pay for membership, testing, and certification fees for these deserving students.
