To prevent human trafficking and exploitation through education and awareness and to help provide opportunities for survivors to thrive.

UNITAS is an international non-profit whose prevention curriculum teaches youth about human trafficking and exploitation, empowering youth with the knowledge to identify and avoid potential risks. UNITAS Serbia has already educated 80,000+ students and here in the US, UNITAS North America has partnered with the NYC Department of Education to deliver our prevention curriculum to 70,000+ middle and high school students in the upcoming 2021- 2022 academic year. UNITAS NA provides “human trafficking 101” and trauma training for US teachers, counselors, social workers, law enforcement, and parents, and has already trained 900+ NYC DOE social workers, counselors, teachers, and staff.

    Youth, including students at public schools and youth served by different community groups and including survivors of human trafficking, as well as adults--specifically counselors, social workers, teachers, administrators and other staff at public school systems who are recipients of our human trafficking trainings.

  • What significant change resulted from feedback?

    Our LIGHTS human trafficking prevention education curriculum was piloted in Forestdale Queens. Following the pilot, two major changes were made based on the direct feedback from the youth: 1) Language was modified to be more youthful and hip; formerly the language was too clinical, and 2) The pre- and post-evaluation questions were shortened, the vocabulary was changed to be more inclusive and the name was changed to “evaluations” instead of “tests”; formerly the content was too long and prescriptive.

    It has made them feel empowered and powerful, more included, and helped them realize their own agency and be more self-actualized--especially with respect to the survivors of human trafficking with whom we collaborate and from whom we solicit feedback.
