What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Closing the Gap for the Underserved
This program focuses on covering doctor office visit co-pays and providing our clients with necessary prescription medications and medical supplies. Care by a medical doctor is essential for our chronically ill clients, and the best method to maintain their wellness is by receiving routine primary and specialty care services. Since our clients require a wide range of prescription medications to manage their chronic conditions, program funds are often used to cover the entire cost of medications for an uninsured client, or co-payment balances for individuals with Medicaid/Medicare insurance. To maintain their health, many of our clients need common medical equipment such as blood pressure monitors, Glucometers and strips, syringes and lancets, and bandages for wound care. For clients with vision and dental conditions, the LFWC provides needed eye exams, eyeglasses, and partial dentures for those whose health has been adversely affected by oral/gum disease.
Lighting the Way
This program provides electricity assistance for clients who are experiencing financial hardships and are unable to fully pay their utility bills. These one-time utility payments made on behalf of our clients are designed to provide emergency assistance to adults who are on a fixed income and living below the federal poverty line. Most of our clients are in a poor state of health; they require electricity for medical equipment such as oxygen tanks and nebulizers, and/or refrigeration for insulin and other medications. Additionally, some of these neighbors have received final utility notices or have already had their power shut off and are in a state of crisis.
Going the Extra Mile: Food & Fuel Assistance
This program focuses on providing our chronically ill clients with additional food supplements and fuel for transportation to and from medical appointments. All of the adults assisted by the LFWC have incomes below the federal poverty line, and many receive federal food stamps. The food cards issued through this program pay for nutritional supplements, vitamins, and additional food items not covered by food stamps. The other part of this program, fuel assistance, helps remove barriers that prohibit residents from making their health care a priority. Many clients are unable to get to treatment appointments for chemotherapy or dialysis due unreliable vehicles, lack of funds for fuel, or the inability to drive oneself home after a chemotherapy treatment. To address these obstacles, the LFWC provides patients with gas cards or monthly pre-paid bus passes. This transportation assistance is for a 3 month period, which is the length of time for one cycle of treatment.
Homes for Health
Our homeless prevention and rent assistance program supports clients who live on the margins of society; in cars, shelters, and transitional housing. This program provides clients with a deposit and 1st month rent for those transitioning into apartments that are pre-defined, low-income properties as designated by the City of Raleigh. Referrals of clients in need of affordable housing come from our partners such as the Raleigh Housing Authority, the Salvation Army, and Triangle Family Services.
