Open Doors

The YMCA is a place where everyone can belong—no matter their income. In an effort to encourage health and well-being for all individuals in our community, the YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South offers an income-based rate scale. Known as the Open Doors Program, the rate scale correlates membership rates to annual household income. We also provide scholarships for summer & holiday camps, before and after school childcare, swim lessons and other programs.

Population(s) Served

The YMCA's childcare programs are designed to encourage children and youth to grow in spirit, mind and body. Our program focuses on character development, with an emphasis on four core values: caring, respect, honesty and responsibility. Our goal is for the children we serve to understand and develop these values that will influence them in making healthy and positive decisions in their lives. The Y provides experiences that enhance and enrich each child’s cognitive, social, emotional, physical and creative development. Within the daily schedule, each child has the opportunity to create, to explore their environment, to develop problem-solving and personal interaction skills and to develop concepts through self-discovery and counselor assisted activities. Opportunities for solitary play as well as group activities are provided.

Population(s) Served

The YMCA’s Safety Around Water program is a signature program for YMCA Aquatics. This program is designed to reduce children’s risk of drowning by teaching them basic water safety skills. Safety Around Water can be taught in a land-based environment such as schools, churches, or afterschool program locations, or can be taught within YMCA aquatics facilities, making this program mobile and accessible to all audiences.
