What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Appropriate Technology R&D
Since 1974, we have been weaving together the new open source tools and methods that are proactively responsive to the profound agricultural, climatological and social challenges of the post-petroleum era. We operate a research laboratory and central teaching facility and collaborate with numerous instructional and demonstration programs. Our instruction includes both the technical transfer side of appropriate technology (how-to and hands-on) and the "invisible landscape" of community the nuts and bolts of creating consensus and social health, distributed decisionmaking, and culturally-protective economic opportunities. We work in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese, with further translation to other and indigenous languages as needed. Our primary goal is to train trainers who will carry on the work in our absence, and to empower these promoters with the tools they need to network with their peers. We support diverse cross-cultural networks.
Ecovillage Training Center
In conjunction with the United Nations (UNITAR, UNESCO and UNFCCC), Global Ecovillage Network and Gaia University, the Institute educates international students and transfers technologies through an immersion pedagogy of ecovillage living, classroom activity and hands-on skill-building exercises, together with workshops, lectures, practical demonstrations, publications, and outreach on six continents. Each year GVI provides public speakers and workshops and master classes and produces publications, course workbooks in several languages and instructional videos.
Ecovillage Network
GVI is building grassroots movements for ecologically responsible human community having social, economic & ecological sustainability. In 2013 this program included providing workshops and lectures in 11 countries on 3 continents, an Ecovillage Design Education semester module in Colombia, S.A. and Ireland, and participation (with consultative status) at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Global Village Institute is the parent organization for the Ecovillage Network of the Americas and has been a regional office for the Global Ecovillage Network.
Marda Permaculture Farm
Global Village Institute operates a "Peace Through Permaculture" initiative in Israel's occupied West Bank with permission of the Palestinian Authority. Included in this program are courses of instruction in permaculture, drylands water management, farming apprenticeships, and natural building. This program is operated with the cooperation and assistance of the and the Permaculture Research Institute of Australia and the Permaculture Association of the UK.
Sail Transport Network
Reestablish domestic and international trade routes by sail transport.
Regenerative Development to Reverse Climate Change
For regenerative development to realize its full potential, it requires collaborative action. In 2016, with the advice of GVI and scores of other contributors, the Commonwealth of Nations took up the challenge. The RDRCC agenda is specifically tailored to the capacities of the Commonwealth nations. Like the Commonwealth itself, the strength of regenerative development lies in its capacity for diversity. The experts we gathered were clear in their recommendation that the Commonwealth will have the most impact as a driver of change by designing elegant solutions carefully adapted to the unique conditions of local cultures and ecosystems. Effective change will not be achieved through abstract, catch-all, lowest-common-denominator initiatives dictated from the top-down. For this reason, efforts to build local capacity are required.
Project NOAH ReGen Fund
The Project NOAH Regen Fund is Global Village Institute's first foray into climate finance "green bonds" to support our projects aimed and marrying the drawdown objectives to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Cloudburst
We promote the people and initiatives that are pointing the way to a regenerative and prosperous future for everyone, illuminating and stimulating a global collaboration, and celebrating humanity and the power of individuals to make a positive difference for themselves and for the planet.
Regen Africa
Regen Africa, headquartered in the Thlolego ecovillage in South Africa works to preserve unique African biodiversity, culture, soils, and plants.
Pocket Project
The Pocket Project designs and delivers spaces and programs that fuel trauma-informed living and leadership in individuals and organizations. We are innovators in transformative edge work, providing opportunities for being, relating, witnessing, healing and restoring.
In May 2022, Thomas Hübl offered a Collective Trauma Integration Process in and for Germany. Together with partner institutions, researchers and over 350 citizens, we framed the process with a scientific research project to gain insights into its impact. Our research question was “whether and how a trauma-informed culture can strengthen our capacity for democracy and cohesion in our society”.
