Notes from the nonprofit

Founded in 1955, the Birmingham Zoo became a 501(c)(3) organization in 1999 with an independent Board of Directors. With approximately 445 animals comprised of 165 species, the Zoo protects and preserves endangered animals and promotes conservation. As a Association of Zoos & Aquariums member, Birmingham Zoo ranks in the top 10% of animal exhibitors nationwide and is the only accredited zoo in Alabama. The Zoo's collection of live animals is the foundation for conservation and education programs and its mission: Inspiring Passion to Conserve the Natural World. The Birmingham Zoo is one of the primary conservation education resources for educators and their students throughout the southeast. Annually, approximately 50,000 students visit the Zoo for field trips or other programs. The state's teachers have come to rely upon their visit to the Zoo as a resource that meets many of the grade-level requirements in the Alabama Course of Study Standards for Science.

The Birmingham Zoo's mission is Inspiring Passion to Conserve the Natural World. The Zoo aims to protect endangered species, educate visitors and the public about animals and promote conservation locally and globally. The Zoo is also responsible for caring for approximately 445 animals and 172 species that call the Zoo, home. BZI is the only zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in Alabama or Mississippi. As an AZA-accredited zoo, not only do we meet the highest standards of animal care, but we also inform and inspire our guests about conserving the natural world and wildlife.

Alabama Power Foundation ZooSchool

• Each week during the school year a class 30+ students attend ZooSchool. ZooSchool is held over 20 weeks/100 days of educational programming annually..
• The ZooSchool adheres to the ALSDE Course of Study Standards in the core areas of English/Language/Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science.
• The ZooSchool curriculum has been designed to reinforce the value of student achievement in the classroom.

Population(s) Served

Zoo Camps are educational and encourage active learning through games, age-appropriate, hands-on science, animal encounters and nature play for students ages K-4 to 12th grade. Each week of Zoo Camp follows an exploration theme for students to engage in their natural curiosity and allow ample opportunity to practice critical emerging science skills. Need-based scholarships are available upon request.

INTERNAL RELATIONS: Create a positive, engaged culture that empowers staff and Board to fulfill the Zoo's mission. 6. FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY: Advance financial viability in order to sustain a robust operation and position the Zoo for future growth.

Implementing a strategic plan that engages the staff, Board, volunteers, donors and the community. The plan establishes sets to meet the goals set forth and create core values that the staff adheres to daily that align with the strategic plan.

The Final Report for the 2023 Strategic Planning Committee was published in late 2023. However, the work of the Committee continues. In January 2023, an invitation was extended to all staff encouraging them to join one of the work groups.
