Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Dog and Cat Foster Program
Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens, dogs and puppies in their own homes. Some of the animals need as little as two weeks of care while others may need up to three months.
Lend A Paw
This program is a foster home based program offering veterans who need medical treatment and have no friends or family members that can care for their pet during their hospitalization or do not have funds for boarding. A veteran is qualified by his/her social worker and their pet is placed in a foster home and any associated expenses are incurred by The Humane Society of Washington County.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Humane Society of Washington County Board of Directors has set a goal of building a spay/neuter clinic that would include an adoption center. In 2016, nearly half of our annual budget of $300,000 was paid to a local veterinarian to provide spay/neuter services and basic medical care to the dogs and cats who enter our program. We have determined that this amount would be reduced by approximately 2/3 if we had a spay/neuter clinic and a veterinarian on staff. In addition to providing spay/neuter services to our foster animals, a clinic would also allow us to provide low-cost spay/neuter and basic medical care to pet owners of Washington County, thereby creating another revenue stream to support our programs.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategy is to launch a Capital Campaign to build a spay/neuter clinic and staff it with a veterinarian and two vet techs, as well as provide necessary medical equipment and supplies.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Through the generosity of one of our donors, the Humane Society of Washington County does not have any mortgage on its building nor on the property next door where the clinic will be built. 100% of all funds raised through the Capital Campaign will be used to construct and staff the spay/neuter clinic. In addition, Lucinda Grandy, Chairman of the Board, and Star Barto, our volunteer grant writer and fundraiser, completed training on "How to Manage a Capital Campaign" at Indiana University's Fundraising School in June 2017.
