What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

South Alabama Land Trust (SALT) is one of the leading land conservation organizations in Alabama, and the only accredited land trust in south Alabama. SALT has protected more than 9,500 acres of sensitive coastal habitat, and seeks to protect and preserve the wildlife, waterways, and wetlands that make up our quality of life in coastal Alabama. This habitat protection--often in wooded and wetland areas along coastal waterways--is done through either property donation, purchase, or the creation of a conservation easement. The conservation of these ecosystems ensures they will not be developed and the natural resources within them will remain untouched. Additionally, protecting sensitive lands along waterways means protecting the water quality of our rivers, bays and estuaries.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Floating clean ups of local waterways

Each year, South Alabama Land Trust, and partners JubileeScape and Osprey initiative, hosts a kayak/canoe- based clean up of local waterways. Participants collect trash from the water and water's edges.

Population(s) Served

South Alabama Land Trust (SALT) works with public and private partners to preserve land in perpetuity and protect our natural resources. We partner with voluntary private landowners, municipalities, State Lands, and other organizations to protect land in three ways—conservation easements, land donations, and land purchases. Our land protection efforts positively impact the long-term health and wellbeing of hundreds of thousands of people who live and work in Mobile and Baldwin counties by protecting the water, air quality, marine life and seafood supply, wildlife habitats, and so much more. This work also prevents runoff from entering river and stream corridors, and protects wetlands that prevent storm surge and flooding.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Formerly the Weeks Bay Foundation, South Alabama Land Trust changed the name in September 2020 to better reflect our growing geographic concerns outside the Weeks Bay Watershed. Coastal Alabama is rapidly growing in population. Our goals are: to protect and preserve as much of the "waters' edges" as possible; educate more citizens about environmental issues; and, engage more citizens in outdoor and water-based activities for both recreation and environmental cleanup and protection.

To guide our work and respond to the opportunities and challenges before us, South Alabama Land Trust's Strategic Plan articulates five specific goals:

1) LAND CONSERVATION: The essential character and function of the SALT landscape is conserved through proactive and responsive land protection.

2) STEWARDSHIP: SALT properties are assets of the organization. SALT will ensure that conserved and owned SALT properties are sustainably managed to protect and enhance their conservation values.

3) FINANCIAL STABILITY: SALT has sufficient funds to meet its land protection goals, fulfill its perpetual stewardship obligations, and support annual operations.

4) ORGANIZATIONAL DURABILITY: Effective people, programs and plans throughout the organization provide direction, resources, and follow-through to implement SALT’s mission. A culture of appreciation and inclusion throughout SALT is evident.

5) COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND EDUCATION: SALT is an essential community institution that participates in land conservation practices throughout coastal Alabama, and we provide environmental education and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.

South Alabama Land Trust is governed by a 22-member volunteer Board of Directors. Three of the board members, including the Chairman, are founding members of the land trust. There is a board committee--Land Acquisition Committee--that guides the staff in all land conservation activities. The Board recently established a Stewardship Committee to work with Land Acquisition and guide the staff in all land stewardship activities.
