Reading Buddies

America Reads grants enabled 175 "Reading Buddies" in thirteen schools to spend 4,782 hours working one-on-one with below grade level students and in summer reading programs with the public libraries which helped 451 children improve their reading skills.

Water Watch grant trained 56 volunteers to test 52 stream sites and 5 enbayments for chemical and bacteriological water quality data. Volunteers spent 1,503 hours collecting approximately 7,500 pieces of water quality data and performed side-by-side testing with TVA.

With the help of an Internal Revenue Service grant, 65 RSVP volunteers gave 11,679 hours to help 3,775 Marshall County taxpayers prepare 3,981 federal and state returns.

National Endowment for the Arts grant, “Melodies and Musings – Our Appalachian Legacy”, provided the eighth year for national instructors to give concerts, performances, and workshops focusing on Appalachian music and stories for 5,541 seniors and school children.

31 RSVP Senior Computer Lab volunteers gave 2,152 hours offering 108 computer classes and reaching 316 seniors. On a survey 95% of the students reported learning new computer skills that they would continue to use. RSVP’s Academy of Lifelong Learning offered 167 educational classes covering topics from health and nutrition, economic opportunities, environment, music, the arts, local history, senior issues, etc. in addition to the computer classes listed above. These classes were attended by 441 seniors over the course of the year.

In partnership with local police departments, the Marshall County Sheriff and District Attorney, 11 RSVP volunteers collected 845 pounds of expired or unused prescription and non-prescription drugs for safe disposal keeping drugs out of the hands of children and out of our waterways. 71 RSVP volunteers who live in the county and do not have curbside pickup participate in recycling by bringing their recycling to RSVP. 5,464 pounds were recycled and kept out of landfills.
