ASO Performances and Music Education Programming
As the only full-time, professional symphony orchestra in the State of Alabama, the ASO provides a wide array of activities across the state. Located in Birmingham, the ASO plays a full season from September to May, consisting of several different concert series. Wachovia MasterWorks, our signature series, focuses on traditional classical pieces and guest artist appearances. The AmSouth Super Pops features everything from superstar legends to Broadway favorites. BellSouth RealPages.com Coffee Concerts are daytime performances mirroring MasterWorks. Protecive Life Corporation Symphony@6 provides an array of music for those wishing to start their weekends a little early and avoid after-work traffice, with concerts starting at 6pm on Friday evenings. Our Indian Springs Gateway series provides easy access for those in the Shelby county area. The Family Concert Series provides music in an atomosphere and manner friendly for families with young children. The American Songbook series is a collaboration with the Alys Stephens Center. And lastly, but not least, the Sounds for Summer Series, 4 concerts in an outdoor venue. Remember, ticket revenue is only 40% of the our operating costs. Your donations are needed. In addition to our concert series, the ASO performs a number of special events each season. These include the New Year's Eve concert at the Alabama Theatre, A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, a Holiday program, and many collaborative performances with the Alabama Ballet, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, Summerfest, the Opera, and many more. Music Education is also a highly prioritized part of our mission. Young People's Concerts are geared toward schoolchildren and introduces them to orchestral music in a fun and educational environment. Our Community Outreach Program reachs underserved areas and those who may otherwise never have the opportunity to experience a live orchestra. These "COPs" programs, as they are called, are also performed in area churches, hospitals and nursing homes. These services are free of charge and need only be requested ahead of time.
